Dear Marc Greeley/Ned Evans, I wanted to again thank you both for your time and your cooperation. By all working together on the issue at hand, I'm convinced we can come to a logical resolution. Below is an electronic copy of the handout for your use on the website or E-mail purposes. The City of Newport Beach is pleased to have this opportunity to communicate with you and your club members regarding your weekly meetings in the Crystal Cove Promenade area. That being said, there are a few State and Local Ordinances which the City of Newport Beach requests that you and your members comply with. Copies of the sections are printed below for your information. One of the Police Department's concerns is the practice of lining up while along Coast Highway, in violation of the "Posted No Parking" signs, and into the Bicycle Lane for westbound Coast Highway. This bulletin has been provided as an educational endeavor as we ask for your compliance with the ordinances in lieu of enforcement. Future violations may result in citations or other action. City of Newport Beach Municipal Code 12.12.010 Parking. A. Posting of Signs. Whenever the City Manager shall determine that the ordinary, efficient conduct of the City's business requires that parking or standing of vehicles on City property (except parking meter zones) be prohibited, limited or restricted, the City Manager shall have the power and authority to order signs to be erected or posted indicating that the parking of vehicles is thus prohibited, limited or restricted. D. Compliance With Signs. When signs authorized by the provisions of this section are in place giving notice thereof, no persons shall park or stand any vehicle contrary to the directions or provisions of such signs. (Ord. 85-28 § 1, 1985: Ord. 1063 (part), 1963: Ord. 914 (part), 1960: 1949 Code § 3600) California Vehicle Code 22500. CVC - No person shall stop, park, or leave standing any vehicle whether attended or unattended, except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with the directions of a peace officer or official traffic control device, in any of the following places: (c) Between a safety zone and the adjacent right-hand curb or within the area between the zone and the curb as may be indicated by a sign or red paint on the curb, which sign or paint was erected or placed by local authorities pursuant to an ordinance. 22505. (a) CVC - The Department of Transportation with respect to highways under its jurisdiction may place signs or markings prohibiting or restricting the stopping, standing, or parking of vehicles, including, but not limited to, vehicles which are six feet or more in height (including any load thereon), in any of the following areas and under the following conditions: (b) No person shall stop, park, or leave standing any vehicle in violation of the restrictions stated on the signs or markings. Thank you for your cooperation, and let's all work together to resolve potential conflicts and/or violations of the above listed restrictions. Sgt Ron Vallercamp NBPD The Newport Beach Police will be out in force @ Crystal Cove, They do not want Cars Staging on PCH. Ned and I meet with NBPD & The Irvine Company to ease a few issues. Please let your friend know to show up at 7:00. Irvine Management will not let us in earlier. Please Note, YOU CAN NOT SAVE A SPOT FOR YOUR BUDDY< IF YOU USE YOUR BODY TO SAVE A SPOT, IT BETTER HAVE A CAR WRAPED AROUND IT. Parking is first come first served only! Marc
Given the limited amount of "show parking" and the high demand for those spots, how is it intended that those spots can be safely allocated? Sadly, I'll not be around tomorrow to see how it works out. Jay? Frank? Jordan? Lemme know how it turns out...
I've never been to this event, but it sounds like all of this regulation is crap. Soon there will be a city fee or tax on it. Don't think that the municipality is not trying to figure out how to bilk more revenue from the guests. Isn't there a stadium nearby with 10,000 parking spots to use? Maybe an aviation factory? The desert? SOMETHING large and paved and not so tightly controlled?
Respectfully Ryalex... it's because you don't live there and haven't felt the impact that CC makes on this relatively small community. CC is an awesome event and 99% of the folks who show up are awesome people. But as the old adage goes... a few bad apples... People who paid multi-millions of dollars don't want to be woken up before 7AM by a few knuckleheads racing down PCH. Moreover, in as much as the community appreciates the notoriety and boon to local business (tell me how much coin Starbucks and Pacific Whey are making off of all of us) others don't like it. For every car nut that loves us coming out... there's bound to be some folks who don't understand and don't like the extra traffic, lack of parking, and hard time they have getting into their neighborhood shopping center to get breakfast or coffee. And what about the guys that ride their bikes up and down PCH and are put into the dangerous position of having to ride out into PCH to get around the cars lined up to enter CC? I'm bummed that tighter enforcement is on its way. But the truth is that the event has already changed. I'm seeing more and more of a different "element" to the crowd than I used to. The event will continue to change. And maybe a little enforcement stops the idiots from street racing and make the entire event more enjoyable for everyone. And to answer your other question... part of the allure of CC is the scenery and surroundings. The parking lot literally has a million dollar view. And finding a parking lot with that kind of view, let alone that much open space in Orange County (where the median home price is now more than 3/4 of a million) isn't easy.
I have been meaning to get out there the last few weekends, but just haven't found time. Now with all this new regulation I'm worried there might not be the nice turnout there normally is. Anyone know if any Enzo's will be coming to the meet?
The fact that the cops are going to be there I think is a good thing. They were there last weekend and it stopped a lot of the burn outs and fly byes that will wind up with something stupid happening and them shutting it down. People lining up on PCH(literally on the road way in traffic) is also an accident waiting to happen. The cops will only show occasionally and it will help to continue the event IMO.
I think I have to agree with you there Scott. Even though its inconvenient for us, we need to find an alternative to lining up on PCH for sure. I have seen my fair share of near misses on PCH because of it...screeching tires and all! Maybe we should all just sleep in a bit more and plan on getting there at 7
This became a bigger issue when they took down the construction barrier that protected the inside lanes. Last week was pretty scary. Hopefully cars will be allowed to line up in the far entrances and the center one will be blocked or something. The poor RACs won't know what to do. They used to clamp the lot after the main parade off PCH finished coming in, but now it will be a free-for-all. I'll try to get there a little before 7 to see what happens.
LOL I will still be there just after 6 to get shots of the early birds and of everybody coming down PCH...and I guess circling down PCH after they find out they cant park and wait tomorrow
Last week there were tickets issued for illegal left turns across the median to enter from south bound PCH. Common sense should not be left at home on Saturday mornings. South bound traffic must use a signal controlled intersection.
I wonder how it will turn out, luckily I will not be showing my car tomorrow, I will be bringing my 4 year old because he wants to go to a car show. I think NBPD was alerted of the double parking incident last week where some cars blocked the first lane of PCH while waiting to get in.
I didn't realize that the NBPD was awake at 7am ona Saturday morning. They must be suiting up a few of their rookies as a hazing ritual for the event this morning. Look out guys, nothing worse than a pissed off rookie cop who has to get up early on a Saturday morning!
I had suggested that before, but the concensus was that not everybody there knows about f-chat or that we would move it. I had suggested many other places as well, but the only thing that would do is split the show into two shows.
hey! im new around here but ive been attending CC for over a year now almost every sat. i think it is lame what the cops are trying to do, where are we going to line up? is the rentacop going to let us in? (ive had some trouble with him in the past...: ) i think moving it might be a good idia. i think that CC is going to start to die if the cops are all over it. Mark
I am sure the Irvine Company will be more forgiving than NBPD... NO F^CKING WAY!!! They'll probably start calling it an 'event', charging for parking, then every aZn kid with an Acura with Lambo doors, and a neon kit will show up claiming his car can take your exotic while drifting through the parking lot. Yeah, the bling-bling and fartcan crowd is a much better choice than simply playing by the cop's rules two words: 'cost prohibitive' edit: Timmy needs to cozy up to the RAC's to be nicer to us by, in turn, being nice to them... carma with a 'c'
Unfortunately CC has gotten to big for its own good. It upsets me to see it being publicized and exposed to the world, as it brings down the quality of the meet. (Well it used to be a meet, but is now more of a car show) Too many little import ricers and bling-bling people are starting to show up. Before, the word got out about CC simply through the grapevine of true auto connosieurs, and the cars that showed up were always amazing and worthy.
After I parked, I spoke to the RAC and asked him what to expect in the future. He told me that they (don't know who 'they' is) had a meeting Friday night. He told me the goal as to break up the gathering. He was not sure how they were going to do that. Anyway, it certainly is a spontaneous meet, with little formal organization, so no way to stop it unless they just close the parking lot to all traffic. I must add that it does not help matters when more and more cars for sale are showing up, along with the leather guy who actually parks his truck in the show area and sets up to solicit customers! Steering wheel wraps, and the like. The "Saturdays At Crystal Cove" mag being done is gorgeous but likely only serves to drive this meet over the edge as word continues to spread. My $.02.
I agree. Unfortunately, and an unsanctioned unofficial event, there isn't much that can be done about the solicitation of the leather guy. I think moving the location to a place such as the mall where nothing is open @ 7 am would be a better idea, plus I think the parking lot is much larger. Although diversity is a good thing, adding a blinged out Civic to a bunch of exotics is poor taste. The ricers will continue to show up, and the number will be growing for sure. Unfortunately, I think CC has grown too big and will never be the same
I haven't attended a CC event as of yet and hearing that ricers are showing up at this marvelous event, ruins the whole fun of CC. But then it got me thinking as to why not just change the date and keep the location the same? Except Saturday it could be Sunday lets say. Moving the location won't do much good because everyone will soon follow the leader, thats how its been since elementary. My opinion to get the issue resolved and not ruin the meet for the rest of us by turning this into a car show like the ones on "Mun2".
