I thought the idea of the challenge style rear grill was to let more air through the engine bay. However I have just noticed that on my CS (plus another CS I have seen) the grill is lined with what looks like a sound deadening material on the inside.
    Anybody got any ideas why?

    that is the idea.

i just checked mine. just the metal with the holes in it. just like on my 355 rear challenge grille and all the other rear challenge grilles that i've seen.

are you sure it wasn't some stuff from the factory that was supposed to come out during dealer prep?

    doody.

I'm with Doody. Everyone I've seen, including mine has had no liner.

Its a single piece right across the rear, black cloth like finish about 1cm thick stuffed with white polyester filling - typical sort of sound deadening material.

I think it may just be there for aesthetic reasons - makes the grill nice and black as opposed to showing all light and the shiny exhaust bits through it.

Shouldn't be to hard to take out though, so I think I will.

you should fill your profile out a bit, splatter.

maybe the PO put it there to cut down on the dB?

    who knows.

Maybe a desperate attempt by the PO to eliminate any chance of dust getting on the engine during the annual drive. God forbid it get dusty.
