Great story! Thanks for sharing it with us, and thanks for approaching the situation the way you did - you probably made that guy's week. Although I only own a lowly 308GT4, I still get quite a bit of attention when I'm out in it. Gas stations, parking lots, red lights, etc. - whenever someone shows interest, I *always* try to be as polite as possible, and although nobody has yet to ask, I wouldn't dare turn down the opportunity to give someone a ride.

I think we sometimes forget just how "rare" Ferraris are in certain circles. Every time I read a post from a newbie here who's never even SEEN a Ferrari in the flesh, I think to myself, "Somebody needs to drive out there and give that boy a ride!"

It's important that we not perpetuate any negative stereotypes about exotic car owners - whatever those might be. What might be something so minor as offering to pop the lid to the engine or open the driver's door to us, could be the best thing that has happened to another person all week. Don't forget that...

I am a member of several different BB's on different topics and that was one of the nicest reads I have had in a long time. I am new to this board, but am glad I found it. I too hope to fulfil my life long dream of owning a Ferrari...I am looking now and know with the knowledge I gain here, I will buy the best car I can find. Thanks for a wonderful board!

I gave a ride to the guy at the automotive paint supply store that had been helping me out, and he too was so appreciative. He said he would remember this for the rest of his life. That made me feel very good.
Now if only Lucy Liu needed a ride that bad...

My life would change forever if I got to ride in a Ferrari

 

I got my first ferrari ride was 13. In a 348, an amazing experience. I was a Ferrari fan before that but, after it became an obsession. By the way thats really cool of you to take someone out for a ride.

 

I don't think that is corny. It's good that there are Ferrari owners out there that fulfill peoples' life-long dreams like that. A friend of mine does that for me all the time, and one time he actually let me drive his 360 spider. I re-live that experience every day. I think I speak for everyone when I say "Thank you, we appreciate it."

I too will often take kids for rides or at least let them hopp in and take pictures.

Always remember being a kid and just wishing I could at least sit in a Ferrari or Lambo and wishing the the OLD Fart who ownded it would somehow know what I was wishing for.

Well I consider myself pretty young (41) and very fortunate to have what I have and love making sure that at least the youngsters I run into don't forget the time the met me.

It is usually something they will talk about for years to follow.

 

Had a similar experience with the F40. We were upgrading the PC in my home office, and I have a Kyosho F40 model on the shelf. The 20 something year old commented that that was his absolutely favorite car, and that he had never seen a real one... and probably never would.

He was polite and helpful so after he finished we went to the garage and went for a drive. I didn't get a bottle of wine, but expression when I showed him the car and offered a ride was worth more...

 

Man why can't something like that happen to me one day.... oh yeah there are only like 4 Ferraris where i live hahaha.

 

Great thread! I had to buy my own Ferrari before I got chance to even sit in one, but it's always a pleasure to share the joy of giving someone their first ride in a Ferrari. It says a lot that there are a lot of people on this forum that are not Ferrari owners, but those that have a dream to realize one day in the future.
Remember that the corollary is true; that if you're an obnoxious ****** when someone plucks up the courage to ask for a ride, that they're gonna remember that for the rest of their lives too, and now that's just cemented that image of all Ferrari drivers as a stereotype.

A couple years back my father had met someone on the golf course and through conversation found out he owned two Ferrari's. He happened to mention to him how into the cars I am. A couple days later when I was visiting, the gentleman gave the house a call and offered to show me the cars.

When I showed up at his place, which was right around the corner, he had both his 355 spider and brand new 360F1 sitting in the driveway. Not only did he have the cars out, but he let me take both of them out!! Of course he went with me and showed me how the F1 transmission worked and what roads were best. All in all we spent a couple hours out with the cars that day. Still thinking back on it, I can't believe how incredibly nice he was to go out of his way like that.

I racked my brain for some way to show him thanks and appreciation for the incredible experience. I was able to get my hands on a Ferrari hat signed by Schumacher. In turn he greatly appreciated that.

To ramble on a little more, I found out then that he had a son my age that lived up north. It was his son who got him into Ferrari's. He would put a picture of a Ferrari in his father's wallet every day until he finally agreed to go to the dealership and just "look". That was the day he bought the 355...

 

Not quite as good--but about two years ago I was at a local tool store (in the 360) to buy a new belt sander. A guy who walked out with me started drooling over the car, couldn't believe I had driven it to the tool store, etc. We spend about 10 minutes going over the car, and I offered him a ride. We were in a relatively empty business district, so we fractured some local ordinances in the process. His grin hit both ears.
