But how? The Cubs raised a banner celebrating their 10,000th franchise win this week. I started thinking about that, and quick math means they had to average 100 wins over 100 years. They've been playing since the late 1800s, but still...I haven't had time to "research", but does anyone know off the top of their heads how many games teams played in the late 1800s/early 1900s each year? I mean, the Cubs have only won 90 games a few times in the last 20-some years. Maybe they had a few 300-win seasons:)

Well the cubs consider it a win if they lose by less than 5... makes being a cubs fan easier.

i believe it was a 142 game season in the nl in 1900, i'll have to do some more research, i'll try to get you a definitive answer tomorrow.

i did a little more research last night.
you know what's interesting? back in the timeframe you asked about, mlb didn't have a fully sanctioned schedule, teams played "around" 152 games each season. for instance, in 1899 the st louis perfectos, who finished around the middle of the standings, played 151 games, the cleveland spiders (finished in last place) played 154 games, and the chicago orphans (near last place, they were beginning the tradition for the cubs, :D) played in 150 games.

what's also interesting is that there are only 2 franchises with 10,000 wins, that's the cubs and the giants, but there are 2 franchises that will probably have that number locked up within a year or 2, and those are:
    cardinals - 139 away
    dodgers - 110 away
there are a few more teams that are within a few seasons of the mark, the braves, pirates and yankees.

did you also know there's only 1 team with 10,000 losses? that's the phillies, with 10,041 as of the current standings. i remember that being a huge fuss last season when they hit the plateau, i was watching the game (of course the loss was to the cardinals :)) and thinking, wow, it's gotta suck to be a phillies fan right now.
