    I thought I'd try this here, instead of P&R, because I'm not interested in what westerners think about the Cultural Revolution and its legacy. Because I have been reading about the Cultural Revolution, I am interested in the thoughts of those who lived through it. However, I am not interested in a historical sense, but what rather impact does it have on modern China and Asia. Do people still look over their shoulder in fear, or has everyone forgotten about it?

    This is not a topic that can be answered by a few para..I am not a mainlander but lived through the period that took place in HK/US. The legacy been negative as a whole decade of growth was written off and youngsters, school age missed out of education opportunities. One reason China lagged behind the west in economic development.
    As of today, China is still recovering from that lost decade but are able to accept the end results of the Gang of Four did to the nation. The topic , unlike the incident on June 4th in BJ, is not considered as taboo and censored.

    Not the best memory of China history. My staff was there @ the height of the revolution. He estimated that probably 20million died. There were corpses in the street daily. He was a foreign student in those days but schools were closed and country was in chaos. A lot of irrecoverable culture were lost forever & intellects were prosecuted. everyone took ten steps forward but China probably took hundred steps back.....
