I'm not looking for exact figure ... just ball park. What should a person expect to pay now for a engine out service? No extras no surprises. Heres a cpl I am really curious about and I am looking for ballpark figures from a good indy shop not a stealership .. Having the valve guides done? I know they would do a belt service at the same time I'm just wondering how much just the valve guides and labor for that? What about a complete engine rebuild? And lastly how much would a person save pulling and replacing the engine themselves?
I've been told it's about 40 hours of labor and roughly $1600 in parts. At least that's what I'm hoping for this spring.
That is straight in the middle of the others and if I fall in this area I will be happy. Still curious about valve guides and rebuild
$6k for a shop that has a good reputation that includes a dyno run at the end and a bit of a warranty on the repairs. I found cheaper ones based on hours but little to no 355 experience and just a belt swap. That price does not include the water pump and your own personal list of "while I'm in here" projects.
$1600 for parts does not include any water pump or engine mount, or refinishing your valve covers, or cleaning your injectors, or your radiator fans, or your heat exchanger caps, or even O2 sensors. A valve guide job, add $5000 to that.
Oh , this is going to be a good thread . It will get good when someone chimes in and says " my car has a receipt for $20,000 for a major " lol 1994 ferrari 348 spider , third owner purchased may 2013 w/ 27804 miles
This is what Fast Cars quoted me. $6,000 for parts and labor. Includes waterpump rebuild. He said he had a special tool/technique for rebuilding the water pump properly. Hill Tensioners are used. Repainted valve covers. If you need headwork, that is an additional $3k which includes removing and reinstalling. He sends out the headwork. Price includes CHE MB guides. Does not include valves. If a few, he wont charge. He doesn't nickel and dime. Cams will be timed to wsm specs. They warranty their work within a reasonable amount of time. If it is an obvious fault of theirs, they will fix the work. If its wear and tear and 5+ years later, then thats on you. Very reasonable warranty policy to me. Fair price as well. I can get the heads done cheaper, but id rather have them warranty the entire job.
If anyone cares this is the last one done on my car by an independent. They get way more for some of these parts than the online stores charge. It's interesting they didn't bother with things like spark plugs or air filters. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Major plus, all valve shims, 2 new 355 exhaust ecus, axle work, heater core flush, new light stalk control, oil tank pipe weld, $14,000, purring like kitten. Or should I say whinnying and snorting like an Italian Stallion, Giddyap! Urban expert Ferrari Service 25+ years experience.
Gobble, After removing the cost of the $2300 Cat Converters, and the $2000 water pump, I would say you got a pretty decent deal. As for the air filters, I don't replace it on my BMW until 30,000 miles, why would it be different on a Ferrari? Spark plugs on the same M3 last 60,000 miles. I will try to get 30K out of the Ferrari.
It was the previous owner but I agree, 29 hours isn't bad. I'm hoping I don't find all these issues that Bradan typically finds when we go in there soon.
Oh god, I should dig out the service records on my car from before I bought it. The prior owners pretty much took it to a dealer and said fix everything for a major. Scary number after scary number. On top of that every time a CEL came on or the slow down light showed up they did the same thing.... which was all the time. Several times a year. Just slicing off $1-3k charges multiple times a year between the $12-20k major services. Jaw dropping stuff that could not sway me from buying. In the past 3.5 years I have spend less than $1000 on maintenance as a DIY'er and about $6k on modifications/preventive things.
Same thing, the dealer folder on mine was 2 1/2 inches thick or more.. it even had listed ferrari polo shirts and hats that were purchased.. It is refreshing to hear someone didnt spend a fortune to keep there car on the road.
My car had it's last major done by an indi shop in Louisville ,ky. They charged the owner 2900 labor and the PO bought the Ricambi kit with Hill Tensioners. That included painting the valve covers. This is the most reasonable labor charge I have seen for a major.
Unique Automotive. I'll post the invoice if you'd like. I have done two oil changes, two brake fluid changes and one coolant chsnge in my two years of ownership. My cost was just materials on those items.
