I think I'm going to defect.

Those in the industry know that Windows is a "copy-cat" program from the original Mac in '84. The Windoz quality shows, well I should know, I've been an IT tech for a few years at Intel Corp working on MS based OS.

I'm reaching a point where I want to spend more time using a PC not tweaking settings, not worrying about Windows based threats, patching up holes, etc or in short, my prior line of work. I run Win2K which is stable, but its not all its cracked up to be.

I've been on PC based systems for so long, I really haven't played on the Mac till recently. I was beside myself how easy it is just to get going. I don't want to say it was iPod easy, but it was intuitive. I liked it allot! The bottom line was, I spent more time using it, than figuring it out!

For those on the Mac platform or Mac gurus, how smooth is it? How far and between is the 'bomb' frequency versus uptime? Comments or gripes welcome.

I use Mac & PC. I have been Mac user since mid 80's, and PC user around the same time. I was never comfortable w/ MS DOS. Even w/ MS Windows, Mac is much easier to use. Mac has major softwares, too. When new niche software comes out, they are often not available in Mac version though. Then I use Virtual PC, and you can use PC softwares. PC hardware & software are cheaper.
Mac does experience some freeze due to downloading something from the net or some extension conflicts w/ the current system. However, once you turn it off, and start it again, OS start-up will usually take care of it. (I forgot what they call this process) I have experienced a freeze 3 times since switching to G5 in last Sept or Oct. (I don't remember exactly which month) It was right after Silver 23" cinema HD LCD display came out, as I got them together.
For ease of use, Mac is better based on my experience.

I have both and i much prefer the PC. I'm so much more capable a user when i'm on the PC, when something goes wrong with the mac (and contrary to popular belief macs to crash) i have no idea how to troubleshoot it. On a PC its usually cake.

Mac almost are too simplistic to use, the more advanced functions are difficult to access compared to a PC.

I use whatever gets the job done, I am lucky enough to own everything from a pc to a SGI Onyx2 Graphical Supercomputer (see pic.)

All that said, I'm typing this on my Powerbook G4, and I think that says a lot!

As a general purpose machine, I love the power and stability (relatively, the sgi kills it.) of the mac platform.

It's a cut above, and you can feel it when you have time to read a book, have sex, etc. instead of chasing the latest stupid PC-ism.

We just replaced all computers in the office with the new G5's with 30" screens. It looks soo good.

Macs do sometimes freeze, but we have only once in the last ten years had a serious problem with the loss of some data. (User mistake, not a computer mistake). We do not have an in-house IT person (15 computers, server, networked etc.) and have virtually no down time.

Also, there are almost no virusses for the Mac.

After growing up PC, I converted in college to Mac. Every thing works wonderfully and the interface is very pleasing.

I've had my G4 powerbook for almost 2 years, and it's only frozen maybe 3-6 times - but that's because I was running Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Word, iCal, iTunes, iChat, Safari, Preview, and Illustrator simultaneously.

Actually, you know what program has crashed the most on me (and by a huge margin)?

    MS Internet Explorer.

I have used both but I'm a PC guy and feel no need to change (maybe it is just the Blue Microsoft wire running directly into my brain). In the past year or so I have had 1 crash on my PC at home and it runs 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I only shut my PC down when I go out of town for the weekend. I don't see the need to switch over to a Mac although I do hear good things about them. The software isn't there for a Mac without using smoke and magic to use them (ie vitural PC). Macs are great for graphics and publishing. PC's have the market cornered and will continue to do so for many years. Apple has great marketing!

Bought a G5 two weeks ago. I love it. I originally bought an Apple II many years ago and used the original "powerbooks" at work before we were forced into MS land.

IMO it's like getting a computer for the first time again; the ease with which one can produce slideshows, movies or burn CDs blows away MS. Not to mention it is much less virus prone- and faster. There aren't as many games available but I use a playstation for those and the only computer game that really matters to me (Doom III) will be available on Mac February 4- and I'm sure the graphics will be much better than those on the MS version.

This is good input! Thanks! You know your system well enough give a robust overview. This is what I needed. I may get one and phase it into my computing needs as I transistion OUT of Microsnot world.

I agree, hackers seem to have it in for Billy Bob taunting his security.

GEEEEzzzzzz Ben, you have enough power there?????? I would hate to see your utilities bill! ;)

You do still need some MS softwares like Office even you converted to Mac.

Let's hope virus makers will stay away from Mac. I want to keep Mac users small like Ferrari owners!

Ben/Artherd, How are you? Your have the computer! Thanks for your help in the past!

OK, WHERE TO BEGIN???!!! I started in computers on SGIs. Then had to DOWNGRADE to PCs because they dropped the ball on personal workstations and lost the market. STUPID!!!

Now I'm on a production using Macs. And I'm here to tell you IT SUCKS!!! The user interaction is unbelievably clunky. I know I'm a Mac newbie. But I've asked some Mac users I know and haven't gotten any solutions to things that bug the hell out of me. Here's an example:

Why can I only resize a window from the bottom right corner?

Why is there no mouse focus? Meaning, the system should know which window the mouse cursor is in and automatically make it active. The number of mouse clicks in my average day has at least doubled. And it takes more than twice as long to do something because I just can't remember to click in the stupid window to activate it.

Why can't you run more than one session of an application? Actually, I just recently found a way around this.

    I HATE MACS!!! AAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, I feel better now. :)

ok you obviously need to switch to decaf

    or drop that crack habit....

what ever you are having issues with mac it is not the problem of the mac they are fantastic, stable, and as a graphics person the only way to fly.

You're probably right on all accounts. :) All I can say is that I can document a 40% reduction in efficiency on the Mac. Not to mention the frustration level. I was ready to throw this P.O.S. out the window if not for the beautiful new monitor.

Anyways, it's my daily nightmare for the length of this production. Next time, I will ask what platform before signing on.

Hi Yoshi! Doing well, into real estate now. Glad to be of service, how is the new server?

    need4speed:

After using the SGIs, EVERYTHING you touch for the next 10 years will be a big dissapointment I am afraid. They really were (and still are, despite not having made anything new in 5 years) 'the ****'

At least we get good 'ol /bin/tcsh on the mac (as opposed to a 'command prompt'? on windoze! :)

So true!!! When I went from SGIs to PCs, I felt like I went from an F-car to a Chevy. Now I feel like I'm in a Yugo. Thank freeware for cygwin!!! Available for both PCs and Macs. :)

I run a couple of OSX machines. OSX has a beautiful interface, but in the end its just another *NIX machine. I quite like running SUSE linux which has a nice interface for Linux.
Windows is the machine when it comes to office productivity and development. OSX always provides some comic relief when developing. All in all I do find OSX enjoyable to use but I would never use it as my daily driver so-to speak. The one button mouse (standard swap for a 2 btn on all my OSX machines) got old fast. The file browser is hell clunky. I always just switch to the console /get/there/without/pain... -su... rm -r *.* :)

I am currently in the evaluation stages of getting a Mac mini as a home mp3 hub. I am sick of the notebook fan noise! I figure the mini will be nice and quiet.. a little annoyed about the 256mb of RAM.

It's doing great, I think. I haven't heard any problem nor complain yet.

    sportveloce,
I will probably buy Mac Mini, too. I liked Cube's look, & Mini look good in pictures so far. It'll be a good addition to the current Macs in my house.

I've been considering switching (again) the past couple of months. I've been PC/Mac for years, used the very first Mac in college, switched to the Ti Powerbook when it was first released, using PC notebooks these days. WinXP works well and I have no real complaints since I keep everything up to date (NIS, NAV, Windows Update, AdAware, Spybot, RegCheck and other)...wow what a pain! :)

My only problem with switching is the cost of software. I have TONS of good software for Windows including Office, Photoshop, and several others. Is there a good MS Office substitute available for reasonable cost? Anyone tried the OSX version of Open Office?

Pros of switching: beautiful interface, less self-defense maintenance

    Cons: software expense

Is there any resale market for older macs? I have a couple that I wouldnt mind selling. I am going to be upgrading eventually and its somewhat a shame to just throw these into the garbage. Anyone know?
