Yes I must say that this guy is a Nostradumass. He was the guy telling everyone that he had 4 Anniversary Countachs that no one wanted to buy for $90,000. When I told him I would buy all 4 he disappeared like Houdini.

Just look up the posts under my screename and you will see the predictions this guy made two years ago that I called him out on.

Hey guys, first time poster, long time lurker.

I'm looking to buy my first car, and I'm looking to get a 512 or a TR. If I were to get a 512, what year is the best to get, and why do the years vary in cost? Do they vary much in terms of upkeep cost?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, as well.

Reasonably, is it also worth spending the money for a lower mileage car, considering I'm going to drive the living heck out of the car? Insight is appreciated.

    Thanks :)

If you want to drive it buy with some miles. Also if you want a peace of mind driver the diff upgrade would be wise.

The best year to get for a 512TR would be 1994 for ABS and upgrade diffs to name a few. But they are rare(something less than 70 in the US)- and you will be paying serious money for it. So depends on what you want, and your budget.

Most forums aren't super friendly, and I didn't want to bother you guys with an introduction, but here we go!

My name's Matt, and I'm a 20-something year old student from Canada. I absolutely love driving, and I've always been in love with the Ferrari brand. The first time I saw one was in the movie "Goldeneye," and it started from there. I'm looking to buy my first car, and ideally, I'd like it to be a TR or a 512 (I'd prefer the 512).

I know it may seem strange to have it as a first car that I'd drive, but realistically, I live in a city where public transit is quite good and I can walk to most places. This is something I'd want to take out and the weekends and just drive it!

My budget is about $200,000 on initial purchase, but I have no idea what to set aside on repairs, tires, gas, etc.

    Thanks guys :)

    -Matt

Thanks for the introduction Matt. But out curiosity, why a 512TR or the TR since you are 20-something? If you really like driving, I would think a 430 or 458 would be better suited for you - because the TR is a heavy car - one that is not as suited to be tossing around. It's GT car - so you have to align your expectations accordingly.

The reasoning is the unfortunate "car I've always wanted" situation. I mean, you're correct. The reasonable thing to do would be to pick up a 360/430 and drive it like I stole it, but I love the styling of the TR.

With the appreciation, I'm wondering if I should snag one now as opposed to waiting 2-3 years and then having to pay more. I mean, sure, no one KNOWS where the prices will go, but I'd rather save some money if I can find the one I'm looking for.

If I'm not picky on mileage, and only picky on exterior colour (would prefer red, black is also okay), and if I search Europe as well (being a Canadian, I think our import rules are different, I'll have to find out), I hope to find a car for a reasonable price :)

Matt, "car Ive always wanted" is the best reason to buy a TR. Ive bought two. When I sold my first one it was loosing a child hahah. Im a TR guy as opposed the 512......personal preference nothing more. The TR's were under appreciated for many years. Now they are at the proper level IMHO. If there is a dip in the economy, they will obviously drop a little, but I doubt they will fall back to 2011 prices, ever. Do get a PPI for piece of mind and budget $7-10k for a major service if the belts are 4-5 years old. Depending on year, tires are cheap. The 1988.5 and newer have many choices. I replaced the rears due to driving over a screw (sidewall), replaced the other side to match. Total out the door was under $400. The TR is a very reliable exotic. Even more so it you take the time to sort out some bugs and keep her on the road exercising her legs.

Buy to enjoy. You will always have a grin when you open the garage door. It is the most beautiful auto ever made.

Times have changed. When I was a student in Montreal I could barely afford the Metro pass. :)

A note on Canadian rules for importing a car. I imported my 87 Testarossa from Dubai ten years ago. As long as the car is over 15 years old its considered a vintage and can be imported without any restriction. Shipping cost me about $4K, Customs import duty based on their blue book was about $15K and the GST/HST on top of that. The values might be different now.

Check out www.dubizzle.com if you are serious about importing. No TR's but lots of other models.

^^^^ Yes what Christian said. I have a '90 with some miles on it. I thought to sell it recently but now my mind in changing and will probably keep it (what was I thinking?). It is a relative bargain in the market being a the Ferrari flagship of its time, 12 cylinder, mid-engine supercar of the 80's. The motor is wonderful and love the torque, wow. Be prepared to get all kinds of attention, cell pics, thumbs up, etc. BTW, this is all positive attention, people love to see an iconic supercar.

Definitely buy a TR or 512 not a 360. The flat 12 is strong pulling engine and the feel is great. I was disapointed by the 360 after owning a TR.

    Semantics here Matt, sorry ! 512 means a 512BB or 512BBi. TR means Testarossa; 512TR is a 512TR :D

Go and read all pages of our bible first ... And then look at AutoScout in Europe ...

Read and ASK before you buy ... good hunting ! :)
