To me 550s had good design, the 456 was great, and the 458 superlative design wise. To drive the 550 fell on the side of moderns, ie unless hammering it was just a car to drive, alsmost could have been anything. If you want to see the progression of the 12's, the 275 synthessisd everything that was good about the earlier cars, an evolved roadable GTO. The Dayatona I love, but its a big heavy car, somehtign built for crushing continents, which arrived just as the era in which you could do so came to an end, wind one out on the right road past 120mph and its truly epic everyhtign falling inot place, but where can you do this?. There is a reason many daytonas are converted to eps, in order to make try them useable in the modern context. Then we got the boxer, which is a car ferrari felt they had to do, ie mid engined. In period the boxer was slated by some because it was not so comfortable as a daytona, hot inside, and you couldnt take luggage, objectively its accleration and top speed was no faster.. What people did not fully appreciate in period was that a boxer was a great weekend blast car, a car to take into the moubntains, in that sense much like some of the earlier cars. As no one really uses these older cars for distance today a boxer has the charisma of older ferraris but has the power and refexes to play in twisties with moderns, making it for some the ideal combination of clasic ferrari in feel and temrmanet, but with modern moves. Then the Tr series was an attempt to take a boxer(TR Chassis is essentialy lengthened boxer) and make it more useable and relevant, especialy in the USA. The design was dictated by moving the radiators to the flanks allowing for a cool cabin and AC that worked. The design was also dictated by regulation. In some ways astheticaly its an unhappy mix, and in others truly inspired and avant garde given the constraints they were dealing with. The Tr then is useable in range of climatic and traffic conditions, giving ground to the boxer in terms of asthetics length weight and therefore reflexes, but having more modern rubber and power. The wider aceptance of the TR and its ability to be sold globally begat the conceptual direction of the first really useable 12cyl super ferrari the 550. It still has the power, and great motor, but its useability and weight made it really a Gt car, and imo not really so differentiated from any number of other marques. But as Sherpa says horses for courses. After the 550/575 we see an injection of extreme performance and design diffrentiation back into the v12 line while maintaining useability. The 599 and F12 are to me visualy challenged, particularily the F12, which is like bad rendition of the C7 vette(i know the F12 came first), or somehting toyota might have designed. To me as a supercar the aventador is far more appealing. Perhaps ferrari design got corrupted by what they thought were asian tastes. But funnily the asians like ferraris because it was euro taste. The F12 TDF fixes a lot of what made the F12 so awkward by injecting a dose of agression, breaking up the hokey stick flanks and acentuating the fenders. in some ways cheap styling tricks but it works. I also think that here ferrari got the edgy agression back into the 12 cyl car(from what I read) while maintaining a lesser degree of ueability. So they pretty much came full circle back the the 512Tr formula. As for Tr prices, 145K for the best one in the world in ontario 4k miles. 190k for a 1k mile single mirror a few weeks back. To me these are the current high water marks for exceptional cars. A 20k mile 2 mirror great car all service done etc is a 120k ask today.
Hi jeff, I can`t say I know why for sure - but I think one reason is probably that Europe seems to like quirky stuff - and you don`t get more quirky than a Flying Mirror Testarossa. Also Testarossa`s are still seen as a little bit too modern to some people yet - even though to people like me they were a classic from the day they were made! I think the combination of the single bolt wheels and Flying Mirror makes them seem like they`re from an older era. A few years ago that meant more dated - and they seemed to be worth less - but now it means more classic so being seen for what they are. Plus there being less of them aswell. That`s just what I think anyway. To me all Testarossa`s are true classics - just look at that `89 in White that went much cheaper - still an absolutely iconic looking car! Dom
True the main reason to buy is because you love it. But collectible is a big part of value. TR actually ticks more boxes then the 550.

eeks, red intake and silver intake?...fellas, the unmolested cars just got more valuable, and expensive. One 'restoration' at a time.
Motostalgia or however you spell it has a red/tan 1987 Testarossa auction estimate of $180- $215k. The car has 22,000 miles so no super low mileage premium. I wonder if they are throwing numbers out like this so people think it is worth it or if they want people to think it is a bargain when they get it for less?
A 1987 Testarossa with 21500 miles, red/black, sold for $230,000 (equivalent in GBP) last month in London, via a specialist dealer.
230k? really? nonsense. I agree the testas have increased in value but lets all have a bit of reality pie here! Of course they are hyping it up, and is there anyone that would like to pay over 120 for a 21-29k mile testa? go ahead and speak up because they can be lined up for miles right now. 1990 Ferrari Testarossa, 22k miles, RARE black on black, outstanding http://www.dupontregistry.com/autos/listing/1990/ferrari/testarossa/1327798

That I agree on. my point is that with mild negotiation you can easily buy excellent examples of 21-29k mile Testas right now for under 120K and most priced well over this are not selling.
Not nonsense. Sold for £148,000 sterling. Vendor received £148,000 minus 5% sales commission. Convert that into USD and you have around $230,000, depending on exchange rate. Fact, not opinion. Something this thread is quite short on!! Happy to be able to contribute an actual dealer sale price.
I'm returning mine to stock because of rising values, anyone want to buy a Norwood twin turbo system?

One of the 438 UK RHD cars. Yes, 6739 LHDs, making the UK cars more desirable here, at least, and accounting for a price difference between UK and US. Testas much cheaper in US than UK. With TRs the gap closes, and any of the 75 dedicated US market LHD F512Ms seem to fetch more in the US than the 41 UK RHD F512Ms do here (exchange rates permitting).
2280 512 TRs globally of which 88 UK RHD. A smaller proportion of global production compared to Testas, yet anecdotally the price difference between UK 512 TRs and US is not as great as between UK and US Testas. Suggests Testas are more valued in UK than in the US for reasons other than just scarcity.
Where do you guys see current values of single mirror 85 & 86 vs 87-91 testarossa? They are looking much more rare these days.
