I've been working on a project the past few weeks with a leather specialty company, for a set of leather binders to secure and display the accumulation of invoices/receipts, tracing the history of my Ferrari. It has gathered quite a stack over the course of its life, and something other than the plastic Staples binder would be more complementary to the car. The binders are nearly complete, and ready to finish off the covers with a cavallino, model, serial no, and sequential binder volume.

I originally was planning to do a silver foil embossing for the artwork and text, but upon sampling with some swatches of leather, am at a bit of an impasse. The silver foil looks great, and is reminiscent of the cavallino badging on the car, but so does the natural embossing, as well as being somewhat in the style of the natural embossing on the original owners manual pouch, etc. Also tested was the option of a black foil material.

    Thoughts?

Stamped swatches are seem below, and B/W mock-up of the cover arrangement. Of course, photos of the end product will be updated once they're finished this coming week. :)

    Really nice idea!

I chose natural as I think, over time, the silver and black won't survive nearly as well.

It's tough to pick between natural and black. Natural just wins out for me because, as Wade says, it'll probably age better.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Oh, this isn't a product, per se. Just a personal one-off project.

You're missing an opportunity, but I understand.
How did you find the people that do this work?
Would they be willing to make additional versions?
    Thanks.

McKinley Leather is the company that I'm working with. They specialize in custom leather goods, and have a great reputation for quality with quite an array of binder options. A fellow Ferrari owner went through them for his F355, which set me down the path after looking for others. On the phone with Derek, he mentioned that they had done a number of Ferrari pieces over the years for various customers. I'm sure that they would welcome additional business. The finished product (English Bridle leather, following the feel and features of the factory tool kit) is a bit on the pricey side, once tooling costs for the custom artwork starts to factor in (although it is a one-time charge and cataloged for your re-use). I'm having a total of 4 binders done, each with a unique tool for lower text, and 1 shared tool across the 4 that contains the Cavallino and car serial no, for about $800 all in.

I'm guessing that they can't market this product without a licensing agreement with Ferrari.

At triple the price and then only 5 people buy it. Or double the price and have it produced in China. No thanks on either. ;)

After reading this thread, I called McKinley Leather and spoke with Derek to purchased one of the binders. The workmanship was excellent and Derek was professional, patient and courteous.
