I will soon (very likely) be opening a computer building company and have a deal with a professional painter who did several years of work with lamborghini before starting his own shop, he will be handling my custom computer paintjobs (desktop and laptop) I want to know what you all think of this and if anyone would be interested in purchasing one?

I also have a deal with an italian craftsman (located in sicily) who will do custom wood cases (desktop/laptop) from real wood by hand out of his anchient sicilian workshop. He holds several computer technology degrees and is an excellent craftsman to boot. He currently uses maple, cherry and walnut. He also does monitors, keyboards and mice.

Well, a comp is just a comp. So I think you will have to post a few examples to get much interest.

I would but only if you sent it back :) oh and what magazine do you work for again? I have a few sites that would take the machines from me.

Examples? Sure. Here are some pics:

First here are some photos of the lab/factory etc.

The woodworking laboratory is located in a Dammuso, an ancient and typically Sicilian construction, with an arched roof make of stone blocks without the use of cement, whose rock foudations go back to the medieval Palatiolum, opposite the remains of the Castle in the quarter of San Paolo.

Here is another photo of the laptop and one of an unfinished desktop (when finished you will see nothing but wood. Sorry I don't have any keyboards or mice. Can also do speakers but again no photos at this time.

I'd like to point out each piece is signed and numbered and real fully organic wood with a real history behind it, we've used pieces from floorboards of old houses to old boxes etc. (we could use new also but this way is far cooler)

Note: this is a rather old dell laptop we used so..just thought I'd point that out.

They're nice(ish) but nothing radical or new, there's been companies selling wooden computers/keyboards/mice/monitors for years now. You're going to be aiming at a very niche market, so you better be planning on high marketing costs to get the visibility you want. If you manage to get into that market, you're going to need to provide white-glove support for the machines, keep that in mind.

Really, today nobody really cares about custom built machines unless they're gamers, and gamers build their own.

    Just thoughts

    Josh,
I can only speak for myself, but my observation is that computer technology is continuing to change very rapidly. Therefore, computers today are very 'disposable'--which does not mesh well with old world hand craftsmanship.
    Be careful.

Well the old world stuff was intended for business users who don't always need the highest end stuff and also for linux users who again tend to not require the highest end stuff. The desktops are of course fully upgradeable. Plus most notebook users keep their notebooks for at least a few years.

I dig this stuff... BUT the only suggestion I might make is to integrate some other materials (like a stainless/polished metal trim) to really make it pop. A little leather probably wouldn't be a bad idea either.

No metal trim with the wood. however leather could be great, I will definetly hook customers up with some nice leather carrying cases (perhaps italian leather?) Also maybe leather palmrests.

So if you like it you want one? taking pre orders :)

Time to sponsor or quit stealth marketing. Big difference between "what do you think?" and "buy my stuff"

    Good luck either way

I think something like a Lian-Li aluminum with a chromed chassis and titanium PVD'd enclosure would look pretty swank.

There's black, grey and gold colored PVD's that would look awesome with a variety of light leather, wood or chromed accents, depending on what color pvd you get.

Lian li makes some great cases. I also really like (so does my painter) silverstone cases. They are the best of the best imo.

I just might advertise but first I need to know a bit more about doing so. Oh and I need a banner and I have to get a website up and running.

Uhm.. you're basically taking the easy route and making plastic into wood. If you want to be innovative and grab the market you'll integrate something different.

I'd like something that had the texture and feel of an exotic automobile interior. Leather, wood, and metal all working together. Right now you've just got wood.. not very interesting.

SO.. no, I wouldn't want what you're currently offering and I've got a whole house filled with tiger-oak 19th century antiques, btw. :D The appeal is not lost on me but I definitely think you need some fine-tuning.

Leather with wood trim and leather with aluminium trim would be two nice trims.

The Ferrari Market Letter - but we wouldn't publish an article on a Lamborghini computer... I could shop the article around or I could just publish it here - a rave review right here would be sure to drum up some interest in your product...

And of course I'd send it back - what would people think if a big Ferrari fanatic had a Lamborghini computer...? :)
