The latest Robb Report contains an article on custom made/fitted shirt. Of course, i'm too young (READ: Broke) to be able to get custom shirts but what are everyones opinions on these. Are they worth it? Anyone have any interesting ones they care to share?

Bought some back in the day from the Custom Shirt Shop.

What a frakin' waste of money, at least in my opinion. Back then (early 80's) they were over $60 a piece.

Marginally better fit, way more money. I'm not all that easy to fit clothes onto, being a size 45 jacket with a 17 1/2 - 35 shirt size on my 5'9" frame, so I figured I'd give custom shirts a shot.

Long story short, now I buy my work shirts wherever they're on sale. Sometimes I buy a couple dress shirts at Brooks Brothers.

But you've met me, so you know I'm not exactly a slave to fashion, either.

Yeah. We have good friends going to Shanghai and i figured i'd buy one custom shirt here and then send my measurements to them. He is very picky about what he buys and has to have the best (i'm like that a bit) and he gets all his custom shirts done over there. He goes to the most expensive place and pays $35-60. Its incredible how much difference there is in price.

Interesting that Ascot Chang has 4 places in Hong Kong (plus their head office), 2 in Shanghai, 1 in Manilla and 1 in New York. I wonder if there is any price difference?

I have bought about 4 or 5 shirts from Ascot Chang. I find the fit and quality of the fabric to be far superior to some of the other custom shops I have ordered from. Assuming you don't sweat a lot or spill stuff on the shirts, they will last a long time. A $300 shirt goes a long way (and looks great in the process) if you take care of it.

Thanks :) Did you actually get fitted personally or did you buy them online? Were they full customs or "pre configured"?

There's an online article at mens.style.com about buying a custom shirt. Here it is: http://men.style.com/gq/fashion/landing?id=content_4802

I've been thinking about buying a couple as I have a hard time buying dress shirts. But, there's a guy here in LA that does them fairly inexpensively, i.e. about $100 a shirt. You bring in the shirts you love, one that has the collar you like the best, the one that fits you the best in the body, sleeve length, etc... And he takes those along with some measurements then makes a shirt based on all that you've given him.

I think it all comes down to the tailor and making sure he/she knows exactly what you're looking for.

Oh, the mens.style.com also has a nice little thing on buying a suit: http://men.style.com/gq/fashion/landing?id=content_4800

Just bought (read replaced old with new) a half dozen custom fit dress shirts from the Mens Warehouse. They are nice and not too much more than the shirts that I was buying anyhow. $300 on an everyday shirt for me is a waste of money as I am outside a lot and deal with stain causing fluids on a daily basis. It seems to me that they were about $70 a piece and you build it the way that you want it, ie french cuffs, covered buttons, edge stitching, collar, pocket placement, number of pockets, vent style etc etc etc. Not custom made but custom fit with sizing in 1/4 increments instead of 1/2 increments.

I get mine at Ascot Chang in Beverly Hills. They are personally fitted. 100% custom. The upside is they fit well. My left French cuff is larger to fit around my watch. The downside is the fabric is such high quality, that it wrinkles before I've left the house. If I'm not wearing a suit, I just wear my Brooks Brothers. They dont wrinkle as much.

Has anyone had the same problem with Ascot Chang wrinkling?

i had a few made about 25 years ago that i grew out of but are still being worn by my still slim bud that i gave them to. they still look sharp. no lost buttons, cuffs not frayed. another testament for getting what you pay for.
