CV Boot Clip - how to tighten the original type

    I stuck with the original type (see picture) but I simply cannot get them to tighten down properly. If I try to pull the clip tight with pliers before bending it back, it lifts away from the rubber - creating slack.

    In another, long lost thread, Rifledriver mentioned that he simply used a flat head screwdriver - but he knows what he's doing and I clearly don't! I am on the verge of going to one of the other types. I will put cable ties on as an interim measure.

    But, if anyone can tell me how to do this properly I would be very grateful...

    How about using two pairs of pliers, one to pull the long end and the other to push the "hole" end down? Once it is tight, grip with the second paid and bend the end over.

    I've not tried it, so it's only speculation. I bought new CV's that came with new boot flanges and boots, which were already fastened together. I bought new small boot clips, but I think my new boots must be thicker because the clips wouldn't fit, so I've used cable ties on the small ends. They good and tight and they're not going anywhere.
