Cylinder sleeve/ liner replacement

    Good evening gents,

    Theres a chance I may need to replace a liner on cyl 7, I will be dropping the motor myself and pulling the head for proper inspection. If the liner does need to be changed, do I need to strip it to the bare block and off to the machinist or is there an alternative? I did find a used color matched piston rod and sleeve.

    You need to make a tool that fits at the bottom of the liner and then use a slide hammer to pull it out the top. Needless to say, the piston has to come out first. Do replace the rings and the rod bolts.

    Don't forget to heat the block if you can and shrink the sleeve ( in the freezer) when assembling.
    100% use new rod bolts !!! Normally no need to remove the crank.

    Why is it that you feel you may need to replace the liner?

    Zero compression on the cyl. I'm sure I'm going to find a bent valve or two. Piston edge looks damaged using endoscope

    good on the scope as initial diagnostic. Hope it turns out amazing.
    Just curious though, Any idea how it happened?

    Argeed, I would want to know if there was a issue that caused this, such as a clogged injector that caused a lean condition in that cylinder etc

    I do have a slide hammer, once I get the piston out I will build an attachment to remove the sleeve

    Caused by bad injector? There is no indication of any piece coming in contact with the piston

    This is what happens: Your cylinder was running rich for a variety of reasons (grandma drives it, bad header, bad tunes, bad injector) and there is excessive carbon build up on the valve face. It never comes into contact with the valve seat 100% and therefore cannot dissipate all of its heat into the block. Eventually it burns up, melts away, and you have zero compression. In the process, the liner is worn out, the rings are gone and you maybe lucky if you can save the piston.
