This is what happens: Your cylinder was running rich for a variety of reasons (grandma drives it, bad header, bad tunes, bad injector) and there is excessive carbon build up on the valve face. It never comes into contact with the valve seat 100% and therefore cannot dissipate all of its heat into the block. Eventually it burns up, melts away, and you have zero compression. In the process, the liner is worn out, the rings are gone and you maybe lucky if you can save the piston.

Which is exactly why I said to do a leak down on the block. In fact, I'd do a leak down with piston at top, bottom and locked at 1/2 stroke.

Nikasil is very thin. You won't know without using a bore gage to measure the inside diameter of the liner. But, do as John said and leak down the bottom end.

Not pretending to be the smart one but that's not why a valve burns.
A valve burns because of to low cam - valve clearance. This way the valve doesn't close totally and the hot fumes from the combustion are pressed true the little opening between valve and seat. This way getting even hotter and burning the valve and seat.
That's why they say it is better to hear a valve ticking then hearing nothing.

Second reason could be a very lean mixture ( not to rich) this way raising the combustion temperature.

Carbon build up comes most lickely from oil consumption.

Use the finger nail test. If you don't feel a ridge at the top of the stroke the liner is probably OK. Nikasil is really hard and you typically won't feel a ridge unless it's worn through. Also, if the Nikasil is worn through but the sleeve is otherwise good you could have it replated.

    Really?

    Even with hydraulic valves?

I didn't know a 348/355 had hydraulic valves? Must check again.

There are many ways to burn a valve. Anything that causes the valve not to seat correctly.

    355 yes, 348 no.

When diagnosing a failure it is helpful to know the characteristics of the engine in question.

My mistake. Thought this was about an 348 engine. So my explanation is of course non hydraulic valve only.

Mixture and oil part counts for both also.

That chamber is awfully crowded for a 348.
