    Exterior looks very good, very well built.

    Under the bonnet it is apparently mostly a 4.2 Etype with Webers which is similar to a Dtype but not quite the same.

    They didn't have an alternator in 1956. ;)

    It would look cool going down the street although perhaps a little out of place.

    If you could vintage race it I'd be interested otherwise it makes as much sense as having a Batmobile.

    Its the Jaguar version of building a '63 GTO on a 330GTE 2+2... ironically Fantasy Junction has one of them too... and a Norwood P4... and a Kirkham Alloy Cobra... and a rebodied Alfa 6C "Corsa" too...

    The Motoring Enthusiast has a Proteus C-Type for $64k less. I have no idea of the condition or miles.

    Either car would be a great weekend canyon-carver or track car. If I were buying one I would consider uprated mechanicals a plus. Its not like you are defiling an irreplaceable classic. As long as you're honest about the fact that its a replica, what's the harm?

    Beautiful. Personally I prefer the D-type... just my taste I guess. Blond vs brunette... Both are stunning though.

    The C-Type, to me, is one of the most elegantly beautiful cars ever made. If you have ever read Burt Levy's The Last Open Road he has some great descriptions of the C-Type. They are easily in my top 5, maybe top 3 most beautiful cars. I am glad to see the Proteus replicas are getting more affordable. I will need a bigger garage, it seems.

    Do these replicas have the crap beam rear axle that makes both cars handle like a barge and only really suited to Le Mans for where they were designed?.

    Rather have the E-type. With similar modified motor and far better rear suspensions on most tracks and roads you would blow a C or D type to the weeds.

    Remember the E-type was a D-type converted for the road. Similar monocoque and spaceframe engine craddle, just better (more modern) rear suspension.

    And yes I agree with nathandarby67, the C-type is the best looking Jaguar that was actually made in higher volumes that 1 (ie. xk13).

    Any Jag with a PROPERLY set up live-axle drives as well as can be expected in its' day.

    When shopping for a C or D replica, do your homework. They all look similar at first glance, but there are a lot of differences.

    I'd put my list together like this:

    Aluminium body (a lot are fibreglass)
    A properly tuned 3.4 or 3.8 engine; these are much happier than the 4.2 mill and at least period-correct
    A properly set up rear end: independent is nice, but there's no space for the trailing arms of the normal Jag IRS, so the A arms need to be re-inforced to locate properly.

    My preference would be a C with a beam rear axle. I drove around with one for a day and simply LOVED it.

    I'd go for a C-Type but a non race spec car ie car with 2inch sandcast SUs and drum brakes.

    Does anyone have any information about the possibility that there were "20" D type recreations commissioned and authorized by the Jaguar Factory.
    I have heard this was the case. Can anyone confirm?

    +1 - $139K is all the money for a replica. Looks great, but still "just" an E-Type. You could bag a great S1 OTs for $90K - $50K less!

    Shoot - take the S1 OTS and bag a 308QV as well...

    Curious as to what you mean by the 3.8 being happier than the 4.2? I am leaning towards a Series 1 E-Type coupe as my next "fun" car. From what I have read and people I have talked to it seems the 4.2 engines are maybe a bit preferred, at least when it comes to E-Types. I gather it is mostly due to them having a bit more torque and being a bit more tractable in daily driving situations, along with the better gearbox and other small improvements in the rest of the car.

    Would love to hear from folks who have driven both! (I am talking triple-S.U. 4.2s, not the twin Stromberg S2 versions.)

    Wow, the XK-SS is beautiful.

    There is someone out here that has a Proteus C Type, really nice looking car. The D-Type looks great, go for it! :D

    Hard to tell the difference - negligible for stock vehicles IMHO. I own a 4.2 with 3 SU's, and have driven 3.8L cars...I can't tell.

    I noticed that... I used to think they were one of coolest competition car dealers around. The poseur factor is up a notch or two.

    Series 1 OTS. Not only is it real, but I would say it's actually better looking.
