He was driving on the highway last night and fell asleep behind the wheel. He clipped the guard rail and went off the highway, flipping his car many times down an embankment. Amazingly, he's all right and his dog, which was caged in the back of his SUV is also fine. They took him to the hospital, but released him last night. He has a minor scrape on his head and that is it. He must have quite the guardian angel. I'm very thankful and am flying out tonight to see him for the holidays.

    Be safe out there.

Ouch.. Good thing he and his dog are okay!
Is he going home when the accident happened? What kind of SUV was he in?

    Have fun during the holiday!

Good to hear that he's OK. Many times I've heard of people who were asleep escaping with minor injuries in car crashes, while others in the car suffered more serious injuries or death. Supposedly, being loose and relaxed is a big help in avoiding injury.

I have heard the same thing about drunk drivers. They tend to fare better in accidents because their bodies are usually more relaxed at the time of impact.

Steering myself back on topic, I'm glad to hear that your dad and his dog are doing well after the accident.

He was in a jeep grand cherokee. He was actually driving home after a 2 week trip to China, so the time lag must have gotten to him.

    I've heard that as well.

TPower, I'm very happy and relieved to see that your father is okay (the dog too!). I spend a lot of time on the road and know what it's like to get sleepy behind the wheel. Buy your father a bottle of No-Doz for Christmas (no, I'm not being sarcastic).

Did he wake up while during the accident or not until after...? Either way, you need to get him back into the driver's seat of a car right away.

I hope you and your family have a very happy, safe, warm, wonderful holiday season.

He told me that he woke up while rolling down the embankment. Luckily the car stopped before the tree line. The car is obviously totalled, but he was going to pick up a rental car today. He sounds pretty good considering all he has been through. Thanks for your well-wishes.

Car wrecks yield a weird effect on the psyche. I'm very glad to hear he's picking up a rental and will be driving. I hope it all doesn't come flooding back to him through fear when he gets in. If this isn't his first wreck, he should be fine. I assume the hospital scanned for a concussion, right...?

He has been in other wrecks, but never one where the car rolled. I'm not sure what the hospital did. I'll have to ask him.

Also ask if he lost consciousness any time after he woke up... Sometimes a concussion won't show up for days...

Thanks NNO. He did say that he fell back asleep on the ride home from the hospital when his friend was talking to him. It may have just been the fatigue, but I'll make sure he gets a full check when he gets back to his regular doctor. Thanks for your concern and advice.

Wow that is great. I suspect he will be a little sore and his dog is fine.

That concerns me more than the accident itself...! I only drag this out because I've had more concussions than I can remember (did you know that concussions contribute to memory loss...?:)). Make sure he gets checked out and don't leave him alone for too long at any given time until he's been properly checked out! Good luck and keep us posted.

I was in a wreck once where a dog was in the car. The car was totaled; the five passengers were all banged up a bit, some worse than others; but the dog was miraculously unscathed. I couldn't fathom how that was possible; the dog was in the back and should've went through the windshield. But he was completely fine.

Best wishes for his speedy recovery.

Good chance he's feeling some long-forgotten muscles, so... Ice for 1st 24 hours - heat thereafter.

No one-on-one basketball in the driveway or ATVing or Snowmobil...! All that boppin' around jars things. Been there, done that.
