We just found out last Friday that my dad has an in-operable 4 cm brain tumor in the center of his brain and the doctors have given him about 6-12 months. This is so disheartening as he has been courageously battling cancer since 2000. He has been suffering with Lymphoma for 5 years, and Melanoma for 1.5. He also had his prostate removed in 2000 after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had “PUVA” radiation treatment to treat an area of cancer that had returned after the prostate cancer, which in turn caused the skin cancer breakouts. He has had no less than 100 spots cut out, lanced or burned off in the last few years. He literally gets 5-10 removed every month, some of which are so large they required a skin graft. His dermatologist said that he is the worst case that he has ever seen. I had him to Mayo 4 times in the last year and things were just starting to improve a bit before this diagnosis.
This is a guy that worked his fingers to the bone for his entire life. He had a great job as a personnel director for our power company, which he loved, but would come home and work on his rental houses until dark, to try to make the best life possible for myself and my 4 siblings. He sold my wife and I our first house for no money down when we were 24 years old and had no money saved at the time for a down payment yet. It was our first of 4 houses and was the “jump start” that we needed. He also bought fixer-uppers (dumps), did a sh** load of work to them and sold one of them to each of my sibs.
He also did thousands of hours of volunteer work. He was the Exalted Ruler at our Muskegon Elks club 3 times, he helped save the Grand Rapids Elks from foreclosure 2 years ago, he was a member of Rotary, the Lions club, the local business development council, and the mayor of our city. He has also donated to many charities and has given loans to my sibs over the years (which pissed me off cuz some of them took advantage as they were never repaid).
It’s hard to imagine not going to Cavallino w/ him anymore, as we have done for the last several years. He loved seeing those beautiful Ferraris at the Breakers and going to the track on Friday to see them race. Thankfully, we were able to go last month as he was not showing any symptoms of the tumor at the time, so we didn’t even know he had it. It’s sad to hear him ask me what day it is 7-10 times in the course of an hour and to ask me how my boys are doing when I have only 2 girls.
Brash at times and never one to sugar coat anything, he was not loved by everyone in the community, but he always did what he thought was the right thing for the community and us kids. He is honest as the day is long and NEVER did anything to purpously hurt anyone nor ever did anything dis-honest in his adult life that I know of. To this day, I am still happy and proud to call him “Dad”.

    OUCH!!! Man that sucks.

Try to have fun with him the next few weeks and be ready for radical mood and or personality changes as it advances.

    All my best wishes!

My sympathy goes out to you, your dad, and your family.

It is hard to give any words of comfort to someone in your situation, and not being in your situation makes it impossible to relate. But my brother-in-law's father was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of kidney cancer and it has metastasized throughout his body. I do not know him well at all, but my sister's children are crazy about him. He goes to all of their sports games, spend every Sunday together, and is just an overall great grandfather to them. It is difficult to know that they will grow up with only a vague memory of the man that loved them and took the time out to show them that love.

My mother gave me some words of comfort that stuck with me and maybe they'll help you. My mother told me that she has been given the opportunity to watch her children grow up and support themselves so that they can live a comfortable lifestyle and any day after that is a gift. I think she is right. Your father has lived a great life and I hope that you can spend as much time with him during his remaining days and strive to celebrate the great time you have shared with one another. Good luck.

Wow, great guy that has had to deal with a lot recently. I wonder if working for the power company had anything to do with the assorted bouts of cancer? Sorry to hear of the news. All the best moving forward.

Jerry, very sad to hear this news.
My heart goes out to you, your dad, and your family.
    I'll pray for your family.

My advise, spend as much time as you can with him.

(I mean this in the most caring way possible). Ask your dad if there is anything he wants to do before he goes. (Trip to Paris, Skiing in Swiss Apls, etc.)

Jerry....Saddened to hear that news. What a GREAT Dad you have! I had the same Dad who passed away of lymphoma ten years ago. Ask people here and friends and family to pray for him, as the power of prayer can be very strong. As stated by others, spend as much time as you can with him. When my Dad was in the hospital, I'd visit him. Just being there with him gave him strength and with all the family and friends that did visit, he beat the doctors expectancies by three months, as he was in the hospital twice and got strong enough to go back home...........TWICE!!!!

Again, you have a GREAT Dad that SO many people do not have in their lives.

The power of prayer is amazing. Recently, I had an uncle that had a surgery, and everything that could have gone wrong did. He was in no way expected to survive, friends and family prayed for him. He ended up surviving, and went back to living a normal life. Prayer is the only thing that could have saved his life, there is no other way to explain it. Prayer can change lives, I know it has changed mine.

My thoughts and prayers are with you....

LOTS of carcinigens in electrical distribution equipment, in the old days........hard to say the actual cause of a case like this, probably never know.

Doesn't matter, really......cherish the good days.

I wish you guys the best. My father passed away from cancer a couple of years ago. His last couple of years were very difficult and painful. He had just turned 68 when he passed, but he looked like he was 90. Part of me wanted him to stay with us longer, but another part of me was relieved to see him at peace inside his casket. I recall a friend of his saying he wished he had the power to grant my father an eternity of life and living, to which he replied, "Please, that's the last thing I want!"

    Miss him.

That is really sad. My uncle died from Lymphoma which he got because of skin cancer. I have read a lot about skin cancer because of it. I have never heard of a case like your fathers. Is there any chance this is environmental? Did he possible come into contact with some sort of chemical at some point?

Dude...Jerr. This is terrible news. I always had fun hanging out with your dad. He's one HILARIOUS guy. I can only hope I'm as active and lively as he has been when I'm that age. He certainly knows how to have a good time and share his humor and lust for life, which is all you can really ask of anyone. But seriously, how many old farts (aside from The Hef) can get jiggy with 3 blonds at the same time??? He is the MAN!
