One more casualty in this historic race. The unfortunate victim was the Belgian motorcyclist Eric Palante. Race organisers said the 50-year-old's body was found by officials at the 143km mark of the fifth stage between Chilecito and San Miguel de Tucumán in the north of the country. It is said that organizers claimed they had received no alert from the rider, who had water with him.

A local judge was looking into the circumstances of the Belgian's death.

It is sad but i've begun to believe by the year that this is really ridiculous to have at least one loss annually. Imagine if this happened every year in 24H of Le Mans or in 24H in Nurburgring. It is absurd. I'm not saying that they should stop the Race but they have to do something about the competitors safety, specifically for motorcyclists. Maybe different routes.

Here is a tribute video for Eric Palante from Motorsport.com

Its not tragic to die doing what you love in extreme sports.

Its rallyraid and there is no way to compare to racing on a cushy circuit track w/ runoff areas, tire walls, gravel traps,......and on a motorcycle w/o a rollcage in the middle of nowhere w/o babysitter cornerworkers every turn or medical help ready to roll out of pits.

First reports of a boobytrap set by spectators to see wreaks at recent Baja 1000 killed motorcylcist Kurt Casselli concern me more. Other reports it was a collision w/ small animal but no doubt unruly spectators have set traps (pit or ditch across road or items placed in road) and a problem that need be continually dealt w/ by the event organizers to keep racers safe from intended harm.

Darwin's law on the driver's part. Either thought he was a racer or driving where they should not be driving.
