Too much sand the last couple of days - I hope it gets more interesting.
Been great watching last year and this! Diabolically soft sand today trapped plenty by the looks.. How awesome would it be to compete? or even contemplate at that level? Oldest is 69 in the truck category! A bike team from local town is in it! Blog: http://ghrhonda.dirtbike.com.au/blog/ An Aussie version I'd like to do is http://www.finkedesertrace.com.au/
the better rally or true Dakar is the Africa ECo race won this year by Jean Louis Schlesser,an old jaguar racer.
A lot of guys from here do that each year. Most are not *THAT* competitive, they just want to have a go. Most are on bikes. Got a mate that wants to do it this year on his Yammi actually. No chance of winning, just wants to have a go. A local here takes his off-roader up there. Over $200K spent on it. I dont think he fares too well either. Got the good gear, just needs to get better at racing it. A close friends Dad did the Fink years ago. Same deal, just wanted to have a go. He told me there was this really rough section that he babied over on his KTM 525, didnt want to fall off through it. While babying through it, 5 bikes or so flew past him on their back wheels!! Made him look like he was standing still and he **** himself when they came past. A LOT of injuries to the bike riders also he said. A lot of accidents where they come off and get badly hurt etc.etc.
4 fatalities so far this year - 2 were course workers, one spectator after a car ploughed into a crowd, and a member of the public died when his car collided with a dakar car. The many soft dunes this year have made the racing very tough, with a greater attrition rate than usual. It makes it tougher, but not as good a spectacle as going flat out through the plains of which we saw more of in previous years.
I was going to post that! The Helicopter Pilots are nuts Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
