Last weekend someone tried to get in my 400, with a srewdriver I think. The lock mechanism is severly damaged. I'm looking for a new lock or lock set. I have contacted Rutlands, Ricambi and Eurospares with no luck on a replacement lock.

Does anyone have a suggestion where to find a lock set?

    Thanks, Jan

Hi, I'm almost certain that they used the same door locks as the Alfa Spiders. If so, go to Alfabb.com and search for "door locks" or search for "APE" (Alfa Parts Exchange), among others like Autoparts International, that can supply replacement units for you. Don't tell them its for a Ferrari though or the price will double.

    Good luck!

They look the same as Alfa door handles but they are not. I bought Alfa handles and tried to swop the lock mechanism from 400 lock and it is very different. It could not be 'engineered' to fit. Ended up giving the Alfa handles away and re-plating the 400 ones.

Definately talk to Lee @ TRutlands, another possible source would be Dennis McCann @ http://www.allferrariparts.com/, (614)855-1130. It's better to call rather than e-mail, Norma usually answers the phone. I'm surprised Eurospares even replied, Norma has to call them again & again to get answers from them on parts availability.

Matter of fact, McCann is in Ohio (N.E. Columbus area).

    Thanks

I called McCann at alfaferrariparts and he told me that the Ferrari 400 shares the same lock set with the Mondial 8 and QV. So I can expand my search to a mondial loch aswell now.

    Hi Jan,

Sorry for the bum steer on the Alfa locks, I guess you'd have to have both in your hand, side by side to see the differences in the two.

I have removed my 412 door locks and successfully cut keys (by hand) to operate the existing locks, but didn't have the locks out of my Alfa at the same time. I have been in the lock business, however for the past 35 years (door locks instead of automotive locks) so I am familiar with how they work, terminology, etc. The part that is pictured and appears to have been damaged by the screwdriver is called the "plug". It is the die-cast part that is broached with the grooves to accept the broached key into the keyway. The die-cast part that the plug goes into is called the "cylinder housing" or "barrel", and appears to still be in place in the lock. The plug holds the "wafer tumblers" and springs that allow the wafers to be raised or lowered by the cuts in the key as required to establish a smooth "shear line" on the surface of the plug so it can turn freely inside the cylinder housing.

Ordinarily, when the plug is damaged by attempting to insert a foreign object (such as a screwdriver blade) it usually damages the broaching at the entrance of the plug, but unless really heavy blows are used, the damage can often be repaired and "cleaned up" by a competent locksmith to allow the entrance of the key into the keyway of the plug. If the wafer tumblers are damaged, these are easily replaced by the locksmith as are the tiny springs which are standard in the trade. I would advise carrying the entire lock assembly to the best locksmith in your town and I think that, unless one of the castings is actually busted, they should be able to rebuild, or restore the cylinder to a quite acceptable level. Even if the "cap" which has the spring-loaded flap that drops down to cover the keyway is damaged, which I suspect it may be, the locksmith should be able to supply another one. Some quality locksmiths are real craftsmen and can do amazing work. If the first one you ask declines, ask several until you perservere.

I wish you the best of luck and let us know how you make out.

    Brad

    Brad,

Thanks for your advice and shared knowledge. The cap is indeed completely destroyed. I will try to find a good locksmith to get it fixed.

According Rutlands a Mondial lock is different than a 400 lock. Two different opinions from different companies.

    Regards, Jan

I think the locksmith approach is the way to go; I met a real craftsman in my recent key search.

However, here is a contact that is parting out two 400's:
    Fred Petroske, 315-649-2861; [email protected].
Parting two or more 400’s in upstate NY

This may mean you need to re-key one or both sides of your car, but I think the locksmith can handle that too.

Perhaps the same as the Alfa part but Fiat spyders also use a suspiciously similar looking handle anf lock.
