LILLE, France (AFP) - A man passing himself off as a car dealer stole a Ferrari from an unsuspecting trucker delivering the luxury vehicle near this northern French city, police said
They said the truck driver was unloading the Ferrari early Wednesday when a man in suit and tie approached him and offered his help, claiming to work at the car dealership that had ordered the sports car.

But instead of driving the Ferrari into the dealership, the man made off with it.

This incident, along with the F50 stolen on a test drive by a "potential customer" made me think of a relatively simple countermeasure. An alarm remote that requires a confirming keypress within 5 seconds of ignition, and also has a kill switch.

    Here's how it would work:
Five seconds after the car is started, it beeps, asking you to confirm with a Yes button on the switch. If you don't, it dies, forcing you to coast to a stop.

Someone drives off without authorization, the car will either die on them, or you press the remote kill switch and they are forced to abandon it when it dies, usually less than 200 yards away.

For people delivering cars, the remote is exchanged last, after confirmation of ID, exchange of documentation and possibly a prearranged password with the head office. It is done only after the cars have been taken possession of.

    Thoughts?

Can you please explain to all of us how the car dealer is at fault? From the time a car leaves port untill it is signed off by dealer/magazine/etc, it is the truckers problem. Case in point, an Elise off loaded at our shop was hit and the trucking company insurance was involved, not ours.

Very interesting idea. Necessity is the mother of invention, right? Sounds like a little research is needed. I like it. :)

Wow, really suave on the thief's part. How hard could it be to track that car though? Considering the rarity of it at this point, I'd just put it out to all local law enforcement. Is there any further news on this?

I'd go one step further and have the kill switch lock the doors, trapping the thief inside - muahahaha!
