Yesterday driving home I looked over at my dash above the passenger airbag and saw a line about 1/8" above it. Its the ex-fold line that would go under the airbag and dash. Its alsmost as if the glue let go and the dash shrank overnight.

    1. What causes that ? I will get it fixed someday and want to prevent it from happening again.

    2. What kind of down time am I am talking about, I daily drive my car and don't want to be down too long. How many hours is it roughly for me to remove the dash ? can i assume that putting it back in is the same number of hours ? (I will search for this one, I assume someone has written the process up, do I have to remove the steering wheel ? )

    3. And what is the rough costs of redo the dash once I get it out and bring it to them.

Quite upsetting to see it go that quick, it was fine Friday and on Sunday you can see it. There was some shrinkage around one of the vents when I purchased the car already, so I guess I am going to have to fix it soon but want to prevent it from happening again if possible.

I do not know the answer but wanted to point out that the owners manual says to treat the leather interior 3-4 times a year! For your car that is about 50 applications of leather care products over it's life thus far. There is LOT of leather surface in there to cover and it takes longer to carefully do the interior than it does to wash the exterior so I suspect that this upkeep gets passed up. This is only my theory.

Mine has a very small crease -- hardly noticeable. My dealer told me that there is a company in town that can fix them. Not sure what that entails. I'll try and find out.

I've had a bubble since I bought the car a year ago. Now I have a couple more small bubbles- the glue is definitely giving up the ghost.

Rebel: I'd be interested in hearing a solution.

I have been trying to figure out the best way to get to and treat the 2 inch band of leather on my 458 between the windshield and the defroster vents. That area gets a lot of heat and should be treated frequently. I had to put a piece of cardboard on the inside of the windshield to prevent the leather conditioner getting on the windshield. I used a 2 foot dowel wrapped in a cloth to get to the leather strip. Still not an easy process. Does somebody have easier way without making a mess. Trying to get leather conditioner off the windshield is very difficult.

Yes, I have perked up my ears to hear any solutions. Griots garage makes a triangle shaped cleaning wand that is designed to reach into the corners of the windows and clean them but it's probably best to not get the goop on there in the first place. Maybe keep a small size sun shade in the garage that is dedicated to the purpose of barrier.

I thought the leather was glued to the foam which was glued to the dash.

    FOAM

    DASH SURFACE (Fiberglass or composite)

Am I not incorrectly accurately confused?

I tried it but you can not get in there because the angle is wrong. I am designing my own angled wand to get in there. Will use cardboard to protect the window from the leather conditioner.

Sun will cause the leather to shrink and pull away. No amount of glue willstop the shrinkage of leather. Since I have a spider I treat my leather 4 times a year at least.

I guess its a matter of opinion, really. I've used Lexol in the past too, but greatly prefer the Einszett. It has absolutely zero sheen, and has worked well in my Aston -- which has the most enormous leather dash I've ever seen, tucked into a wildly raked windshield.

I have used Lexol and still have it, but my vote is for Letherique. Its by far the best.

Do a quick test with old leather gloves that are OJ Simpson stiff. Treat one with Lexol and one with Leatherique Rejuvenator. Rejuvenator will bering them back to almost new. You could also try an old wife purse, leather shoes, whatever.

ok, so I guess I did not treat it often enough or the prior owner didn't and now its shrunk.

Any good leads on where to get it fixed in S. Cal. ? Do I have to take the dash or wil they dot it ?

Well you can take out the dash or they can; but make sure they have done BOTH before your car. You dont want your car to be their beta program.

Or you can take it out yourself and ship it to Bradan (a FChat sponsor), they have posted what looked like an excellent re-leather job, in one of their threads: Bradan Group, LLC

*Because of this thread; I just spent 1.5 hrs in the garage with a micro-sprayer full of Leatherique rejuvenator and blue gloves doing the entire car.
    1. Buy very small travel size water sprayer (walmart hair section, $1)
    2. Fill with leather product of your choice
    3. Spray on leather in a fine mist, or on gloves if a tight spot
    4. Rub in to the leather with a bit of force
    5. On bolsters you should massage it in very good
    6. Let sit in the heat for a few days or as long as you can stand not driving
    7. Wipe excess off with Pristine Clean (Leatherique) or your fav leather cleaner. I know, cleaning last does not make sense, but its the procedure that works and is recommended. Because when dry the leather soaks up the rejuvenator. As it soaks in the dirt comes to the surface in a milky/grey cloud, and its a little sticky. Just wipe that off. Then you have a soft smooth (full sized) leather cockpit.

Yeah, see what a hassle it is? This is why I suspect that it doesn't get done enough to our cars.

I dont see this as a hassle. Just washing the car and drying it properly takes that long.

I call it a required preventative maintenance. I do it bi-anually or twice a year, whichever comes first. I used to do it every 6 months.

....and look how good and slippery it looks! (have not wiped off the excess)
