    i am not mechanically/electrically inclined at all (which has proven to be unfortunate and expensive over the years!), so dont be puzzled by this probably stupid question....

    i just went out to pick up my daughter and when i turned on the lights, the tach light did not come on. then about 20 minutes later it did.

    it is somewhat cold, the car was cold, and i really did not drive very far and it never got the oil temp past the bottom notch. dont know if this is relevant.

    i thought it might have been a bulb, but when it came back on i guess its a short. how/where/what should i check and perhaps re-attach?

    I would bet you have a bad ground to the instrument (a guess). Most of the larger instruments have two bulbs, so if it is dark, then works, it may be just a bad connection or ground somewhere. I am unfamiliar with the instrument panel on a TR, but you would likely need to remove the cluster to check and clean all the connections.
