    Hi all,

I need some local advice. I am going on a date with a girl in NYC on Thursday night. I am from Australia and don't know where I should even begin! The girl is a local so I need to avoid the tourist traps.

Pretty open with the cuisine; I like Italian but any normal restaurant would do. We are both mid-20's so nothing too stuffy but at the same time I don't want it to be too busy and loud to talk.

    Advice greatly appreciated!

If you like Italian and enjoy an excellent Italian wine list, don't miss Bottega del Vino on 7 East 59th Street around the corner from the Sherry Netherland.

The food is delicious and the restaurant is authentic Verona, IT where its sister restaurant is located.

    Bon Appetit!

Lupa in the W.Village/Thompson St. is excellent Roman cuisine. One of Batali's joints. Can wander from there into the Village/SOHO instead of hopping a cab from midtown to your next stop.

Little Owl in the west village. Very small romantic place with great food. My longtime girlfriend, now wife, and I have had many special occasions there.

Thank you all for the great suggestions. I looked into them all and ended up going with The Standard, it was a great night out.

You have such an incredible city!

If Italian I feel Il Mulino and Babbo are very tough to beat (and that's coming from an Italian born and raised in Brooklyn :) )

Date already ended, but NYC restaurant discussion is always a good topic

For italian, Il Mulino is the best, hands down. Babbo is overrated, have been there multiple times, doesn't come close. Also scalinatella on 61st and 3rd (opened 30 some yrs ago by the original bartender from il Mulino) is also good. More subdued than il Mulino (it's in a stone basement), food is excellent. Il Giglio is good down by wall st if you're downtown, it was opened by the wife of one of the brothers that originally owned il Mulino. Btw, the original owners opened a place in Miami called il Gambiano that is as good as il Mulino in its heyday.
