I had just planned on flying out to Olney and back Saturday to scout some of the hunting club’s ponds. Such a great day I asked Jennie if she wanted to go and bring Mia. They were game, baby seat fit in back of Skyhawk just perfect. I had plenty of room, but little harder to climb in. A few bumps, but a really nice smooth flight. Did a touch and go at Olney and then flew around a little before heading back. Mia slept from the time the engine turned on until we turned it back off 2.1 hours later. She didn’t like the head set at all, so we left them off her, the noise wasn’t too loud, best might have been to put them back on after she fell asleep. For ear pressure we never went higher than 5500, but gave her a pacifier for entire trip.

Everything worked out, this gave Jennie and I confidence we can start taking her on some weekend trips.

Let me tell you a slightly different story about my son's first flight at about 8 weeks old - 35 years ago.

We lived in Albany, Georgia and had a family cottage near the beach in Panama City, Florida. Between the two there is little or nothing - mostly swamp and pine trees.

After work on a Sunday - I worked Tuesday thru Sunday flight instructing - we decided to go to the beach for the "weekend" and fly back Tuesday morning.

We departed shortly after dark in a brand new Commander 112, climbed to about 3500 feet (ears you know, leveled off, and my wife passed the baby over to me in the left seat - no baby seats back then mind you.

About 30 seconds later, the engine quit cold. No warning, just went to windmilling.

In about .00025 seconds, I had passed the baby back to my wife and began the emergency checklist. It didn't take but to step two to see that the baby's shoe had caught the fuel selector value and managed to select "off" on the center console when he was passed over to me (asleep) from the right seat, so when I selected a tank again, the engine fired right back up again and off we went - not sure we lost more than 50 feet through the entire maneuver. The baby never woke up.

Still - the experience reinforced the inportance of training and just how important repetitive emergency training can be. Without it I (we) may have been a statistic.

Other than that, I recall the weekend was a welcome respite from the relentless work of being a GA flight instructor.

Rob - I'm glad yours was uneventful.

    Roy
