The last of the Supermarine Float planes was the S6B. It had the Rolls Royce R engine. The Spitfire/ Hurricane engines were a descendent of this engine. It was only then called the Merlin. Rolls always had these weird names for their aero engines Kestrel, Goshawk, Buzzard, etc The funny looking strips/pipes are the cooling/ radiator pipes that run the full length of the fuselage. I think it was the first float plane to break the 400mph barrier until the V24 engined Macchi did 440 mph a year or two later, not soon enough to win the Schneider Trophy though. Lady Houston was responsible for the 100,000 pound donation for Supermarine to stay in the competition, and because of her patriotic generosity, may have been a silent key to ultimately allowing the Spitfire to ever possibly exist. Lucky for everybody I should think. Reg Mitchell, Lady Houston, and Henry Royce, Charles Rolls. At least they could say they stood "Shouldah ta Shoulda" eh Jooolia!
They were 37 litre engines and the Merlins were "only" 27 litres, so for all the rev heads this was THE powerplant of choice for the one's in land speed and water speed pursuits. Only when the Griffon engine came along for the Mk Xii Spits did the capacity go back up to 36 litres. Along with the Napier Sabre doulble 12. which was 36 Litres. What a powerplant! 2 flat 12's one on top of each other, two cranks. No valve gear, finished it's development pushing out over 5,000 HP !!! WTF!! 113 gallons/ hour consumption. I wonder how much carbon tax you'd have to pay to have an operational aircraft??
can i get an idea whom is coming to the John Surtees dinner? Do we have a BBQ or just drinks and nibbles? How much sponorship dollars should we ask the FCA for ? I was thinking about 5k.
count me in. will fly in with doc stay the night then fly out gimme the exact date and will book tonight
Just spoke to RD up to 34 cars, inlcuding some fab cars,275s,Daytona,Lusso and various other cars including a 195 and about 4 QMs. Also told a chance a certain Lusso that is coming to OZ for Phillip is to race (been a race car all its life) might be going along. I'm told the roads and views are the best Tassie has to offer.
What are the rules for this rally please? Ferrari Carb V12, front eng carb V12, pre 73 carb V12? Are Boxers 179 deg V12's? 365 GT4's and carb 400's excluded? I understand that 308's are not V12's with 4 pots missing. FCA member? The $50 million bank balance (as opposed to assets) is understood.
Front engine carby V12 Ferrari 365 GT4 is ok, Carb 400 pk Boxer no, engine is at the wrong end ( and that's before we debate whether or not it's a 179 degree v12 or a flat 12. If you're in the FCA and have a qualifying car you would usually get an invite from the organisers, (unless you've recently joined and they aren't aware of you , or you are so special that you have earned a spot on the "reserve list") M
No debate. Ferrari factory admit that the boxers are 180 degrees V 12's. BUT they used the term FLAT 12's originally , so they are happy to leave it at that So........... We call them flat 12 boxers.
