Having a small problem with the tach on my 86 328. While engine runs fine (just had 30,000 mile service done) tach doesn't go over 3000 rpm. Heard this might be caused by bad wire connection. Where do I check that?

I had a similar problem initially after getting my 328 about 5 years ago, but it cleared itself up after more frequent drives (the car hadn't been driven much by the prior owner). In my case, the tach didn't just max out but was very sluggish up to about 3K rpm. Something similar can still happen if the car sits for a month or so but it fixes itself after about 10 miles of driving. I'd haven't come across a good explanation.
