Davidson sets a time that is quicker than the V10's. Could be possible that the V8 can be faster than last year V10.

Kimi Raikkonen’s V8 record lap of 1:09:423 set yesterday in testing at Valencia was eclipsed today by Anthony Davidson in the Honda RA106.

Just three teams remained at the Spanish test circuit today as the teams now pack up and get ready for the first official laps of the new season next Friday in Bahrain.

Davidson stopped the clocks with an impressive best lap of 1:08.543s, completing 70 laps in his Honda. His time was in fact even quicker than the record V10 time recorded (1:09.005s) by Raikkonen just over a year ago.

David Coulthard was back in action in the Red Bull Ferrari, completing 62 laps, suffering a quick spin as his V8 Ferrari let go, recording the second best time 1.8s off Davidson’s scintillating pace. Toyota were also on track today in the modified but seemingly off-the-pace Bridgestone-shod TF106s. Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli some 3.5s and 3.8s seconds off the ultimate pace.

With just one week to go until the season is underway - Honda, Renault and McLaren Mercedes are all looking strong.

That is an amazing time he said, especially compared to Kimi's pace yesterday. If that is the true pace of the Honda, the rest of the group might as well pack it in. Maybe our boy Rubhino will finally win a championship.

I've said it in other threads and I'll continue to say it. For everyone last year and through the winter who wined about the rule changes and how devastating it was going to be to the speed of the cars I think you've got some crow to eat.

Now whether or not this year turns into a rout is a different matter! While the time is very, very impressive unfortunately it's only one lap of a hundreds. The times that really count are the consistent times teams have been posting over the hundreds and hundreds of laps this past winter. I'm looking forward to this first race and hopefully it will be just that. A race. If it turns out the cars have indeed clawed back most of the speed from last year but one team drives off into the sunset then I must admit I'll be asking some of you to pass the crow.

Was there a rule change in tires? I thought the faster lap times may be contributed to a different tire compound

This year will be a super year for F1, I'm certain. The rule changes will make the game so much more interesting. RACER did an interesting analysis on all the rules and in particular of the new qualifying system, which will make qualifying more interesting AND add to the racing as well. We will see new strategies when it comes to pitstops and the whole show will be so much more fun to watch. Can't wait.

The super time of the Honda basically prooves the FIA right: Had they not demanded a drastic cutback in engine power, the cars would be even so much more faster now. I think 2007 will be very different with only one tire manufacturer, there will be much less need to restrict power as Bridgestone will simply cook a harder compound with less grip to reel in the cars.
