With the new rules for GT and combining of past classes is the 360 GT gone and replaced with a modified 360 Challenge? Is the new "360 Challenge" for GT closer to the 360 GT's or SGS's in performance? Everyone root for FerrariChat.com Sponsor (FX Performance) Costa Bertuzzi as he copilots the #53 with Ragazzi and Chiminelli. I will add updates to the thread as the race goes on. I won't be staying up all 24 like I have in the past though.
Hi Rob, The following are pictures of Costa's #53 Ferrari 360. It does look kinda like 360GT, but aren't those mirrors from 360 Chellenge? But Costa called them 360GT... I'm confused... - Patrick Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes, I'm confused too. Looks like a 360 GT front spoiler and stance to the car. The times are about 1-2 seconds off the 360 GT times of last year. However, the Porsche times are 1-2 seconds off too. My dumb guess is they are 360 GT's, but they've been toned down a little like the Porsches so more cars in the class can be competitive. I think they are called 360 Challenges simply because Grand Am wants a closer association to the street cars. Too bad the expert Old Guy is there at the races or we would have a quick answer.
I think the cars are 1-2 seconds off this year because of the weather condition during the testing and qualifying sessions. I think it rained a little.
Yes, there is some technical changes. i'm trying to find out specifics, but they're a hybrid GT/Challenge.
GrandAm rules for 2005 esssentially combine the SGS and GT classes from previous years. Of the three Ferraris here (no Maseratis) the #52 Mastercar is a former Michelotto GT car; #53 is a former Challenge car. The JMB #11 is listed as a Challenge car. I haven't had time to look at it, but I believe it is actually a Michelotto GT car. All have been converted to the 2005 specs; the Challenge car has some features to improve its speed and handling (e.g. the rear wing, a GT-style nose) and the GT car has its performance reduced (e.g. a Challenge engine). While I think the Ferraris could be competitive, at this point the Porsches (basically modified Cup cars) are superior. Certainly there are more of them -- something like 27 Porsches in the GT class. (There are 29 DPs starting the race.) O.G.
Report #2 - :20 completed 23:40 left Nothing too exciting yet, just everyone finding their pace. JMB 360 got a stop and go for passing before the start line. Is it just me or that rule dumb? I don't know of any other racing organizations where you can't pass before the start line. In SCCA and NASA GREEN means racing! Report #3 - :45 completed 23:15 left Too bad Dyson's car got rear ended under a yellow in slowing traffic. The #6 car shouldn't just get a stop and go, but be kicked out of the race. I know it was just an accident, but they should be punished for not paying attention. The JMB has moved up 3 places in GT and Costa has moved up 3 too. Report #4 - 1:20 completed 22:40 left TV showed the JMB #11 going slow and into the pits, so I guess it had some minor problems. #52 has been on the move, improving 7 GT places since the last report. The #53 is running laps about 4-5 seconds off the othe 360's. I wonder if they're having problems. Their qualifying times were within a second, so not sure what is going on. O.G. did say the #53 was built off a 360 C and not a GT, but still, practice times were much faster. 41| 52| GT| 15|a/ Monzon/ DeVillota| 38|2:05.343|102.247| 4|2:01.176| 105.764| 3LAPS| 3.340| 0| 0| 0|39| Active|1:23:41.072| 47| 11| GT| 21| Michaelian/ Gooding| 37|2:02.721|104.432| 4|2:01.080| 105.847| 4LAPS| 6.792| 0| 0| 0|17| Active|1:23:46.002| 50| 53| GT| 24|elli/ Bertuzzi/ Diaz| 36|2:07.400|100.597| 30|2:05.705| 101.953| 6LAPS| 1LAP| 0| 0| 0|40| Active|1:24:16.009|

Rob, The level of driver quality in the three Ferraris varies widely. Matt Plumb and Costa Bertuzzi are quick and have experience here. There are quite a few gentlemen (and lady) drivers in the cars as well. Most have never seen Daytona before.
Thanks for the heads up, I guess I shouldn't put too much passion in the competitiveness of the Ferraris. Although I do bleed Rossa Corsa rain or shine.
