What do you mean by upgrade? If you want it to produce more amps, you can have it rebuilt at any good auto electric shop for a couple hundred dollars...they will add extra windings so it will put out more amps...I had that done for my BB512i and it only cost $150 per alternator...

Why? A correct functioning stock system does the job just fine and does not detract from the car. The furthest from stock I have ever felt needed is a modern electronic regulator. Thats hidden from view so who cares?

For an alternator rebuild, find a shop that does trucking or marine alternator rebuilds. They tend to use higher quality parts. There are alot of junk bearings, brushes, and diodes coming out of the far east. Then use an external adjustable regulator. Something like this http://www.transpo.de/cgi-win/product.exe?IB372A
