The car fired up earlier in the day without incident after sitting a few weeks. Took the car for a 25+ mile ride, parked car for an hour and..

Turned key, engine fired up then quit

Turned again.....heard a whirrr but it was like the starter was not turning the motor

Turned key three more times and heard the same thing

Turned key 5th time and car started

Ammeter went hard to the right, but eventually settled to dancing from slightly left of center to far right when revving

Ammeter seemed to settle left of center after idling for a few minutes

Drove it 50 miles, parked, shut it down and it fired up like nothing happened

    Thoughts anyone???

loose battery cable or bad ignition switch? was the battery cable disconnected while the car was sitting? the whirr you heard may have been the cooling fans kicking on when you turned the key on. it would seem you should have heard the fuel pumps running also.

a vapor lock comes to mind, but why didnt the starter turn? I agree, perhaps a bad connection somewhere.
