The Daytona Spyder that had black painted side insets was 12851 prototype ( the only plexiglass nose spyder as well) first shown at the Frankfurt Auto Show at the Auto Becker stand. See Henry Rasmussen's book Ferrari- salute to the spyder(the top ten) I restored this car for then owner Andy Cohen (Beverly Hills Sports/Classic Automobiles) Regards, Mike Regalia

I couldn't wait until the weekend. On such a beautiful sunny afternoon, I had to feel what the Daytona was all about. After filling the tank with some much deserved 100 octane gas and the gauges properly warmed up, the car quickly accelerated on the freeway on-ramp. An aggressive shift from first to second gear yielded no concerns of the rumoured second gear synchro problem. I was a bit nervous letting the car pull to 5000 RPM, but as I entered third gear, my focus was listening for any engine noise imperfections. I must admit the laborsome drive thru traffic to the freeway was less than enjoyable. The car is heavy and demands your full attention with some strength in traffic. Back to the freeway - I was excited to see the long hill in front of me and get a good sense of this glorious V-12 power. Accelerating thru 70 mph in third gear, the shift to fourth was seemless. The steep grade had no effect at all. The butter smooth acceleration in fourth must be experienced first hand. The front end became light and the car felt like it settled down and became more stable as I was now passing the 90 mph mark. Shifting into fifth and maintaining speed was effortless. My only concern at this point were car-parazzi and police. Ten minutes at speed was all I had, but it was beautiful. From the reviews I've read, the long-legged nature of the Daytona is accurate. Unlike the technological marvels of the 430, the Daytona takes you back to the finely tuned and engineered analog vehicle in our current digital age.

    andrew,
try to avoid revs above 4k until oil gauge needle starts to move. same for 2nd gear. syncro will last longer.
    enjoy your new ride.

Ed, No I don't believe so. It was easy enough for someone to do post mfg. but I only know of the prototype(12851) being that way from the factory. MM could verify that I'm quite certain! Regards, Mike

12301 was shown by Ferrari dealers (Chinetti and Hollywood sports cars NY Auto Show And LA Expo both in 1969)
and delivered to first owner Greg Garrison with the same treatment
There may be one other coupe with the painted scallops, I have found (factory photos and homolagation sheets) in my research of 12301.

Mr Shaughnessy: would the ex. Harrah white spider 14543 with the blood trough painted red qualify as a factory paint application? Also would the last spider 17073 with the black painted blood trough also qualify as a factory paint application to (before repairs...)?

Well, There you go Tom! I think we can agree the factory did do this treatment on a few selected special cars, so it's not completely unreasonable to say that it was done, BUT, that being said I would caution anybody that's contemplating doing such a treatment, and then planning on showing their car to verify with documentation that such a treatment was done at the factory on their particular car, otherwise look out! Of course if your'e not showing and not concerned about such things, then do as you wish..........just don't expect everyone to follow along :) Mike
