I have started tracking/racing a spec miata and have been unable to hit the track lately due to family issues that are resolving themselves. I have managed to find a streetable 99 miata with hardtop for an excellent price and have been debating purchasing and using it as a DD.

My logic is this: I DD an automatic pickup truck, everytime I go to the track I have to get used to my SM all over again shifting/power band etc. Plus my footwork is in dire need of improvement and a race is no real place to practice heel/toe. I can buy this car which includes a hardtop for right at 5k and should be able to get that back if needed, plus this would serve as a great starting point for a SM build if I needed another car.

I would love to get a Pcar for a DD but this seems to be a much cheaper alternative that helps me work on race craft while I am not on the track. Thoughts?

I'm not a racer, but driving basically the same car on a daily basis would make sense as far getting more miles in a similar set up.

A lot depends on the driving you do. If you are in heavvy traffic your left foot may get the best of you. Plus when you start modifying for the track ( lower and harder suspension) your arse may resent it.The big plus is you are bonding with your track carr , your milage will improve and will hopefully enjoy the drive more.

Do it. I've owned three Miatas, and the NB makes a great daily driver for one person. A hardtop's even better.

Why not? I do. Heel and toe has become something of a natural thing for me through doing it every day, in all my cars, every time I drive them.

To the OP, if you can get a decent car that gives you the same feel as your SM at a decent price, I say go for it! As other have noted, every trip to the grocery store will help you prepare ( even if only slightly ) for your next track day.

I heel toe every downshift, every car, every day (except my one DCT car). I see no problem with it at all. If anything it is kinder to synchros and the driveline. Now I don't threshold brake as a general rule, as you need to leave lots of extra room just in case, but blipping the throttle is almost automatic to me.
