so what will happen exactly if i take the catalysts out .. sound-wise? performance? and ofcourse, car problems if any? any input appreciated
You will be about 1/4 louder than stock (mabe a little more). Better throttle response Less Heat - meaning longer life for your exhaust manifolds You will get some cool flames out the back on high RPM acceleration Depending on if you have a 95 OBD1 or 96 OBDII - you will have a little ECU work to do (the OBD1 is eaiser) - to make the Check Engine Light to not come on. Hope that helps, Rich
Your car will sound like a chevy.the cats are part of the emission design and you may create new problems with removal of the cat. In my opinion its not worth the headeck to mess with the comuter and every two years you have to bring the car to the original condition to pass the smog, or if you want to sell the car.
Whats this? You don't like me because I warded off a friend (then serious buyer/current 355 owner) from buying your "Story" car? You don't like the fact that I laughed in your face after you refused to let a reputable body shop evaluate your rustbucket? Have you sold it yet? DL

My friend! Fat Roma I want you to be my English teacher to teach me grammar. I am really appreciating your free English services. In return I like to offer you free diet program in my health club. You and your associate might lose some weight to looks better to drive a Ferrari. In regard to the car I sold it, and bought a 1999 Fiorano and looking to buy an F50 soon.
Right. I hear you got 60K (after you tried to sell it here on Ferrariads for over 90). Although I am a little rusty at determining fair market value for 355s, that sounds about right for your car. 30+K buys one helluva lot of animosity I see. DL
I took my cats and muffler off last fall. Replaced them with tuned pipes and a Tubi. Sound wise it is louder, in a good sort of way (deeper voice at low revs) and at high revs it lets out a wail that will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. It does not feel any faster, but probably is. As for the "check engine" light coming on, it did. The mechanic who put it on was able to adjust it so that it would not be as sensitive to O2 emissions. I kept all of the old pieces, but I would never go back. Good luck!
interesting comment DL could you please explain further ? btw, i think i get it but i'm not totally sure thanks in advance
Comical, really. The car was black so he had merely taken electrical tape and covered all of the rust spots inside the doorsill. When I commented about it he said to my friend, "That's nothing. I'll just paint over that for you if you buy the car." DL
what yr of 355? '95(ODBI) 355 de-cat with a tubi is the BEST sounding V8 ferrari, period. if u have ODB2 cars u might get a check engine light.
Be careful doing it. My experience is with a 360 but the car never has run right since taking out the cats. We finally put O2 sensors in the test pipes and that helped a little but it still has idle problems, etc. I would be interested in knowing if anyone ever has made these cars run ok (355 or 360) after taking the cats out.
just to contribute here my 0.02. I had on the straight through pipes instead of the catalyst with a tubi style exhaust. Car is F355, 1995. Anyway, I had the cats put back to the car very soon after because is too loud, really too loud for long trips which I am doing. I agree the sound quality is like a real race car at hi RPM's, and the flames from the exhaust is cool (if you see what I mean), but for coming in and out of my house without getting too much attention, or for driving in the city without calling the police, or for driving 3-4 hours each way on the autostrada to go somewhere is really no good with the straight pipes (for me). I suggest to anybody to hear on someone elses car before you decide if it OK for your needs. The tubi on his own is really good enough for sound especially when the power valve is opening. So in summary of my opinion & experience. I think its depending where you live and what you do with the car if the de-cat & sport exhaust is a good idea...
I just see you comment and its just remind me another thing. The car was difinately revving more free without the cats, you could say it run better. But I was worry at idle because is sounding like popping-back and slight mis-fireing. Man who did the job for me said that this was because there was no pressure at all in the system because is totally "open" and was affecting the gas flowing in the exhaust, I don't know if this is damaging anything, but I didn't like it. It was running not too smooth at idle. I did not get any warning lights coming and the straight pipe included the lamda sensore fitting.
So let me see if I get this right: when Dave showed up in his black 550 Maranello...all you could do is notice his body?? That rather explains a lot about you.... ...At least Dave and I can lose weight...whereas you'll always be an illiterate scrotum-sucking rectal wart pushing your damaged goods to unsuspecting victims. "your health club"...You told me that were unemployed? And now your gonna buy an F50????...before you buy your radio-controlled dream car, I'd invest a few bucks towards hooked-on-phonics.
Darth, I wonder what kind of primer he was going to use on the electrical tape before he painted it. P.S. I have some extra weight, and it's plenty loose as it is.
It was pathetic...the sill was rusting from the inside-out...water had gotten under the sill and the metal decay was initiated from underneath...so he put black electrical tape over the bubbling paint and called it sweet. What was more entertaining was his "tricep-assist" to get the top to come up. We're talking about a lot of coordination here: one finger on the button and his other arm lifting the top up. Then again...maybe it was the shield stickers (decals) that he claimed were factory OEM???? Uhhh...factory shields are made of metal and indented into the fenders. Eddie's were $12 decals he bought on ebay. ...which makes me wonder about his alleged new Fiorano: do they have Fiorano numbered plate decals available on ebay??? EW EW....or perhaps F50 plates to replace the F355 decal on the rear grill???? Eddie: he's what's for dinner
Steve / Teak / et al.. OT Removing the cats will result in what Richard Wallace posted. Basically, Tubi makes a straight pipe that bolts in exactly where the cats use to be. If you find that it is "too loud" for your tastes, but still want the benefits, Tubi also makes a "silenced" test pipe for the 355. Looks like a little muffler that bolts in instead of the cats. It also creates enough back pressure to eliminate "popping" on downshifts that are associated with running straight pipes. On some cars Tubi's will create a "booming" sensation from inside the car at a fixed rpm which can be annoying on long drives. Your last option would be hyperflow cats. They are free flow, will not create a check engine light, but will produce a lot of heat, just as any cat. All a matter of personal taste and your objective....Power, sound, heat reduction. Go to a local meet and listen to another 355 that's de-cated.
