dead dino electrical system

    I am trying to help my buddy with his '74 Dino. He went to start it and it cranked over, caught once and stalled. When he turned the ignition key to try again, he had no electrical power at all - either to the starter or to any other accessory - whether switched through the ignition switch or not (like dome lights, etc.) The battery shows 12.8 volts on a voltmeter, the ground cable is connected to the chassis and shows continuity, the lead from the battery to the starter shows continuity, and none of the contacts to the ignition switch are corroded. It looks from the wiring diagram that all power comes through the ignition switch to a switched terminal board and to a permanently live board. Could it be somwhere before the ignition switch, or the ignition switch itself? Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions? Thanks.

    First off I know nothing about Dino systems but I have seen things like this happen. Have you actually removed both cables from the battery and cleaned them . I have seen it when current stars to flow and then stops and corrosion will stop any current from the battery the next time . Looks like total failure but just a simple fix. Dont know if there is a main fuse or relay ,Im sure others out there do know.Mike

    Is there no power to anything?

    No accessories work at all?

    Sounds like the switch, should be able to check continuity from the non hot lead to the starter when you use the switch. IF the circuit isn't closing, sounds like the swicth has failed.

    Did you check from the starter to the switch and from the switch to the fusebox for continuity?

    Reason I ask is it could be a starter failure, they can be very fussy.

    MAIN FUSE!!!

    Check the main fuse on the firewall. There are two of them, a large 60 amp fuse and a smaller, 15 amp fuse, I believe. Facing forward, it's on the firewall to the right side.

    Try checking the amp meter. Mine went bad and it would intermittanly shut off all power to the starter and engine. It was tough to isolate but once we found the problem Palo Alto Spedometer fixed it and all was well.

    Jusdriveit - you hit the nail on the head. All of the power for the Dino comes through the meter. We pulled out the instrument cluster and jumpered the meter and everything came back to life! I really have to thank you for taking the time to reply - you saved us hours of trial and error.
