Looks like it just sold for over $41k. Interesting part is that if you look at the sellers other auctions, he also has a 308 and 328 crate engine.

If gearbox included, I'd go OKish deal; if no gearbox, not so much.

Although the invoice is dated 1989, the engine SN of 00530, I think, is quite early. Might be an early block that got internally recycled for some reason or other so maybe it got built closer to ~1989 specs, but if built in 1985-6, I believe that there are some significant updates/service bulletins that occurred along the away so those might need to be done. Just a thought...

Anyone ever paid to rebuild one? New liners and 48 valves plus guides?

What's your opinion on the condition after the long storage?

I bought 3 512M crate engines that sat since 1996 and did cold leakdown tests on them. 2.5% leakdown on all 12 cylinders.

I replaced the water pump seals which in retrospect they didn't need after seeing the condition. I replaced no other seals or gaskets, just timing belts and accessory belts. 2 were installed by myself and have been in use ever since, the 3rd went to someone in the US.

Makes me think of all those surplus RR Merlins in crates available after WW2.

There was aprox. three engines built for every one air-frame. I have seen in Latrobe Pa. un-crated original Allison V12 aircraft engines. They say the silver plated bearings need replated from sitting for 75+ years. Kermit Weeks bought a bunch of unused Merlins!
