Just wanted to do a quick survey and ask how long the typical wait anyone has experienced at the dealer for a 30k on a 348.

The local independant here takes 2-4 weeks (their shop is pretty booked up). I think 1 week if they start right away and don't get interrupted.

some run specials or discounts ...I found it very tough to get a 30K appt. for the Spring and Summer...it disrupts all their regulars and their steady busy income producing driving season......OH..some will take your car in....but they will for sure let it sit or inturrupt the work ( not something you really want to happen) with everything else that will come in and have to get out by Friday for the summer weekends.

Has anyone just dropped the subframe and then brought the whole drivetrain business to a shop for the 30K? Is there any saving? Would there be finger pointing issues if there was a problem upon reinstallation....( I might have time to drop the engine in one day but not the time ( or expereince) to actually do the 30K patiently and correctly for a newbie..just a thought since most of the cost and time is R/R labor

If you are getting the 30k it might not be a bad idea to just bring the car in. In my case they found other minor issues (unrelated to the drivetrain) I had them take care of during the 30k as well.

The service 30k by the owners manual should take 35-38 hours to complete once someone starts working. Water pumps, brakes, clutch, Etc would increase the time. What generly happens at the dealer is Warranty repairs (lemon law) and sales delivers (profit) take prescent over general manitance/ service repairs. Sometimes it wise to use an idpendent to perform these repairs if they schedule there work load well you could expect to drop your car off one or two days before and expcet it back a week later and get a fair price. What he is saying is just because the flat rate manual may say 40-45 hours, doesnt mean the job cant be done in under 10. They still will charge you the 45.

for practice, i removed/installed the motor of a fiat x1/9 before i proceeded to dismount the subframe of my 308gt4. the learning curve helped keep the gremlins at bay. a year later i was in torino on business and decided to visit a local ferrari shop to chat with the mechanics (in broken italian) and learned that some of their students actually practiced with lower dead breeds before moving on to the real live thing.

    have fun!

As i recall the manual said 24 hrs r&i of the engine the service was 15hrs you do the math. in real life not make believe it takes 35hrs to do the job and not kill yourself. if you want a quality job.

I have 30+ hours on my 355 service and IIRC about the same 30 some hours on my 348 when I did it. It could be done in less time except I piss around doing other stuff along the way. Regards, Vern
