RE the George Evans 1983 Lamborghini Jalpa vin *12038*

i am very disappointed. someone please tell me how i am in the wrong with cash in hand and airline tickets at the ready, only to be told that i not only cannot have a PPI done offsite on this car, but that no one can drive it for " insurance reasons ". NOBODY BUYS THESE CARS SIGHT UNSEEN WITH NO PPI.

    NOBODY.
i refuse to believe that i am bieng unreasonable requesting a basic inspection at my expense and a 15 to 20 minute test drive with a employee of the shop.

who the heck would purchase a 23 year old Jalpa that has NO TOOLS, OR SERVICE HISTORY , and is missing stuff, like the cover over the alternator keeping stuff off the wide belt and pulleys. the spare and hold down straps are missing. no record of a valve adjustment having ever been done.

    my request:

my name is Michael M(edited), i have spoken with George Evans a few times on
    the
    phone. i was
told that he would be able to send off some pics to me of the car. i would
    also
    like a
brief description of what the comes with the car , and what the car needs
    overall. i am
exempt from emissions, ect and am looking for a good driver quality
    Lamborghini , not a
show car. i will have to pay a state tax penalty of 6% since the car is
    registered to the
dealership and not an individual. i assume the car to have a clean, clear
    title?
    >
    > i have cash, and i am prepared to fly out at my expense to see the car. i
    will require a
PPI to be done at another facility close by. please advise.

hi, if you want to come and look at it, fine, i will supply you with a lift and tools to inspect it as long as you need.
me or tim can take you a ride. i can let you drive it on the lot.
our insurance will not alow test drives of exotics on the road, period.
if you are really a player for this car then you should have allready done your homework on the car.
we have been here 30 + years, we have a very good reputation, we do not "hide things",
i am suprised you would even say that about me.
looks like we are going to list it on ebay this coming weekend as we are still very busy.

    george

i am sorry to rant. but no matter how good your reputation is, not expect someone to just fly in and " look at the car on a lift yourself" with no PPI, no comprssion test and no test drive is riduluous.

    thoughts? opinions?

What prior conversations did you have with George? Just by looking at this email I would say to walk away, but don't want to jump to conclusions without seeing all of the facts.

This email makes it appear that he doesn't see you as a serious buyer for this car. He comes off quite arrogant, almost trying to intimidate you into taking the car as is. I certainly wouldn't buy a car (ANY car) from someone like that.

Micheal, your quest for the right Jalpa continues. I have bought several cars sight unseen including the Countach recently. I did however get a very good "feeling" from who I was dealing with and because of that have never been sorry. The spare and tire straps missing is relatively common as are the tools so I wouldn't get too worried about that, sounds like you will service the car yourself as well so you will probably do work soon correct?
The fact of the matter is that any dealer would know you would need a test drive, but they do protect themselves against "pretenders". It has nothing to do with insurance. I am sure that with a deposit and subject to ppi and test drive clause it would happen.

Go with your gut. If you have to push these things it is never right. At least in my experience.

BULL****....as long as someone leaves me a refundable deposit they can have the car inspected wherever they want, also I do know a friend that has a strange insurance policy that doesn't allow people to drive the cars so that part may be true, but overall he sounds like ******.

    Michael,

Would you buy any 20+ yr old exotic without a PPI? And no test drive? (Around the lot doesn't count.)

Well, maybe if the agreed price included finxing everything a PPI found after the purchase. (as unreasonable a position as insisting the car didn't need one.)

    And no test drive?

    And no records??

I think there might be a car or two in the universe that has more potential. KEEP LOOKING!!

    This guy is unreasonable.

i wish him luck with his Eaby listing on the car. he wants $33,900 for the car. i spoke with George back in November 2005 about the car, and he said it had been sitting idle in his collection for some time as he has an F40 and Countach and a few other exotics. the car has been for sale forever! why would he not welcome a cash buyer that was also a former Jalpa owner???? for $33,900 i would like a bit more than " a drive in the shop parking lot". i know black cars get dirty ect, but it screams "not cared for". the spare is $1000.00 i could care less about the tools, but its a bargaining point on a car in this condition at this price. all of the books are missing and he has NO SERVICE HISTORY of any kind. the valve adjustment and timing chain tension adjustment are very important on Jalpas. they have a reputation for dropping valves and having valve guide issues.

i liked the black on black, picture the car with a set of the gold BRAVO wheels.

guess i am out of luck.

the car has been for sale forever!

Probably for some very good reasons. I would be very hesitant to purchase anything from them. To me it screams trouble. I doubt they bought it under the conditions they insist upon. I am still hoping you find a carbed Countach

i still yearn for 12 screaming cylinders through a battallion of carbs. but it will have to wait until i can pay cash, as financing a toy that can break in many expensive way makes me, SCARED!

thank you for the kind words!

I can really relate. I am renovating my house and a commercial property right now and everything costs more than expected. So much so that the cash I had to buy a new toy is long gone and I cannot justify financing a toy. I really hate to finance anything. Things happen for a reason and maybe if you were to buy this Jalpa your Countach would come along and you would not be able to buy it and it would take the enjoyment out of the Jalpa. I know we got off on the wrong foot initially a year or so ago but I really want to see you get that Countach. Maybe we clashed because we are very similar personalities. Anyway I am sure you are a true car person and deserve one more that many that have one. Best of luck and I am pulling for you.

Forgive me if I am wrong but in the State of Mass comprehensive coverage on your own vehicle will cover you on a borrowed or test drive vehicle over and above what the car or the dealer has for insurance. Show him proof of your coverage and see what he says. I know every state is different so good luck. wortha try.

    The question seems to be:
Can you buy this car safely, intelligently under the current conditions?

    I think you can.

You have to break down what you are trying to accomplish with each task. With the test drive you want to see if the car pulls one way or other, does it make growling noises in a figure 8, are there any rattles, is the power smooth, are there any knocks or rattles, etc.. All this can be done from the passenger seat.

You will of course want to know how it feels behind the wheel, here, you're getting jyped or course, but puttering around the lot will give you some idea.

They will put it up on the hoist for you, so you can do your own underbody inspection. Get tips from some mechanics as to what to look for and you might surprise yourself how good a PPI you can do.

It's not as smooth a deal as you'd like, but when I bought my Fcar there were hiccups as well, but it was a good deal in the end. He didn't need to speak to you the way he did, but don't let HIM limit which car you own. That is YOUR choice.

    I say press on.

Move to the next one. Youre pissed off reaction, though justified, is just what the clown seller is looking for. Let him hang on to his car.

I agree....this line in particular would have made me mad:

"if you are really a player for this car then you should have allready done your homework on the car."

WTF?!?!? Who does he think he is? That is not the way to speak with a customer.

he would not allow a PPI. please read what he said. he expects me , fresh off the airplane to " look the car over". thats not my job. i am the customer. i want to pay a shop to look at the car and do a compression test . when i get off the plane, i am ready fot the results, a brief drive and pay the man and arrange the shipping.

this is less about Evans as it is the question : would you pay $33,900 for a 23 year old Jalpa that you could not have inspected and could not leave the lot with???

that is the question i pose. at the level Evans is at, i dont expect him to care much, if at all. i am asking if similar Lamborghini buyers would pay $x for a car they could not inspect. the car is $33,900, not $10,000 with a disclosure it needed restoration. the car near top market value, is missing stuff, and has NO SERVICE RECORDS.

would you buy it for $33,900?

thank you for your excellent post. i was not asking to drive the car for an hour. i wanted a basic inspection. and a 15-20 minute test drive to let the car warm up and see if everything works. i have had several beater Ferraris. but they were under $10k each. this car , at this price point, demands a PPI and test drive. to refuse it and "offer a ride in the shop parking lot" is insulting. :)
