My '06 Exige has the factory installed Start Shield clear bra on it. There is one spot on the nose of the car that has some light scratches which resulted from trying to clean some gooey debris (tree sap?) off of it. I've read in a few places that people have successfully managed to wet sand and polish this type of stuff back to "new". The other thought I had was to get some clear coat and do just a bit of touch up in that area as I feel it would cover these types of scratches quite easily. I'm thinking about getting the whole set of covers replaced eventually, but I don't want to do it because of one scratch.

Any suggestions on technique for the sand/polish? What can I use to remove any wax build of in the area? I was thinking about just using a mild detergent (dawn dish soap) and a thorough localized cleaning.

    Thanks.

Please do not sand the clear film, I'm not sure where you heard that, but you will ruin the film if you sand it. You can sand and polish the clear coat but not the clear bra.

The most I would do if I was you is to use a micro polish with a finishing pad (very soft pad) and try that, by hand you probably won't get good results, I'd use a DA (dual action) polisher.

Keep in mind many deeper scratches do not come out no matter what.

It was actually on a Lotus owners site that I reda about a guy succesfully sanding/polishing out the scratches on his Start Shield. I personally don't understand how he managed to do that. They are very superficial scratches, not deep at all so I think I'll just try to spray some clear on them and hide them a bit for the time being. I know they won't go away completely until I get it replaced, but any improvment will make me happier for the time being.

Still looking for suggestions on wax stripping agents.

use isopropyl alcohol and dilute to about 20%. apply with a cotton ball on the scratch and haze areas. immediately use detailing spray or water to wash it off.

do this on a hard to see area first. different clear bra yield different results. I had had good luck with mine. some detailers also sell clear bra cleaners. they will probably bash on my recommendation here.

what ever you do, don't sand or rub any compound into the film. you will ruin it. polish is ok.

Don't spray clear coat on the film, it will look bad.

Also using rubbing alcohol could mare or haze the film as well. I'd be very cautious of what chemicals you put on it.

If you're going to use any kind of polish make sure it's a finishing polish or a micro polish, you don't want anything with any real bite to it as that will scuff it up. And don't rub too hard or too long in the same place as that could also mare or scratch it.

You really need to post up some pics otherwise all our advise is just shooting in the dark and you could make it worse.

410SA - Yes, I know, this is ridiculous. :) But if there's an easy way to fix it, why go through the hastle of getting my insurance company to declare it totaled!

I've attached a picture of the scratches to this post. This is the angle at which they appear the worst. They do not look that bad in person and from a pretty broad range of viewing angles, you can't really tell they are there.

That's a good pic of it and to be honest I do not think those scratches will come out. It's film not paint, it's much more delicate. You'll probably have to have the piece replaced.

I have wondered the same thing about removing marks in the clear bra. I think the topic is very relevant.

I have buffed several versions of clear bra from 3m to Venture Shield. ALL of them have responded well. Use a lite buffing compound on a good clean cloth and you will see the results.

I would hope that posters offering opinions would have actually tried something like this before suggesting alternatives. In my case I have actually performed a buffing procedure with success (as well as others above). As mentioned above though I would not try sanding it.

Hey Michael, what kind of buffing compound did you use? I have Venture shield on mine and my installer couldn't get out the scratches with a heat gun.

Every film will react differently to different methods. I install ventureShield And Xpel. Ventureshield is a little softer than other films. My dad somehow buffed out a big tire scuff he got in his bumper with a light polishing compound and a little elbow grease. When he was done with it you couldnt even tell there was a scuff. With other films you can use IA (3M and Xpel Ultimate) and get scuffs out. I would always recommend speaking with your installer first to make sure you are using the proper method with the film you have so you dont ruin it. But the lights polishing compound seems to work well with most films.
