This is your only option. Pay for what you have to to stay legal and hope it doesn't happen again to clear your driving record in the next so many years.

With normal insurance the Rolls Royce wouldn't be your fault. Uninsured Motorist is typical for most companies isn't it? Why didn't your insurance cover it. No fault typically.

Tony, that is an arm and a leg, no doubt about it.

Very risky driving with just liability, you will obviously have to be extra careful, but mathematically this option makes the most sense

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Some uninsured ***** totalled a car our nanny was driving (by herself) and it went through my insurance. Police report backed it up that she was 0% at fault. Geico never jacked up my rates as a result.

That first accident shouldn't have counted against you. That's why you carry uninsured motorist.

What does the insurance run on your other cars? How come you don't have a multicar policy? There are some basic questions any decent agent could ask you and probably save you thousands of dollars. On your Ferrari you should be looking at Hagerty or Heacock though.

Tony, after hearing you tell us at Starbucks of being newly single again, that subtraction should easily pay for your high premiums. jk

I have the GT and 355 with Chubb, and very happy 2 years in.

The comment on reducing your risks is spot on, I have done the same, myself........avoiding peak times in traffic, little driving after midnight.......no short trips, consolidation of errands, NEVER turn left thru traffic.......

    It starts to add up.....hopefully.

My policy on my 328 is about $550/year. I think it's through Haggerty, considered a collector policy of some kind. There are some restrictions on it, but they're not too oppressive. Of course, I've never totalled a Rolls. ;)

Tony, shop around. I'll give you the name of my independent agent if you want a few quotes. Hopefully you have another car as your 'primary'?

Grundy Worldwide is not cheap, but not too bad, and they have no mileage restrictions, and (get this) no deductible, even for glass replacement. They will also write "agreed value policies".

Geico has treated me right the past 5 years.
Full coverage on my '85 308GTS added about $350/yr to the ~$1200 for 3 other cars, only one with comp. I put less than 5000 miles/yr on each and think this is quite reasonable. No crashes in the past 10 years though....

Geico has a great website for trying out different options, promptly connects you to a native english speaker on the phone, and has been more than reasonable about the couple speeding tickets I've had in the past few years. Don't know what they'll say (or how long they'll laugh) after looking at your record, but worth a shot.

FWIW, I see a 10 year old, 4 cylinder sedan in your future....

It definatly sounds like they are cranking up the rates to remove you as a customer (cutting their losses if you will).

Shes probably broke as broke so this may be an afterthought, but in most states you can sue the person that caused your rates to go way up for the difference in previous vs current rates. It wont help short term, but at the very least, you can make her life hell for not carrying insurance. Accidents happen, yadda yadda, but I say thay anyone who is dumb enough to drive without insurance needs to spend at minimum 6,034 months in prison because they can really screw other peoples lives up with one mistake.

When I was 17 I bought my first "sports" car - a 1987 944S. I was paying $250 per month for full coverage.

What other carriers have you called?

Have you opened the phone book to find some local companies? Friend of mine had a horrible record, was looking at insurance close to what you were quoted for a Saturn. He found some mom & pop local company that insured him for half.

Hi everybody, I'm sorry I haven't posted responses in a while. I've had a lot of business issues to deal with so my time on Fchat has been limited. I very much appreciate all the opinions and advice. I will definitely be looking into it over the next several days and let everyone know how and what I did come up with.

    Merry Christmas Everyone!

I JUST GOT MY QUOTE FROM TRAVELERS INSURANCE AND I ALMOST CRIED!

For the same exact policy I have with Progressive that Progressive quoted me $5200 for, Travelers is quoting $2062.00. THAT SAVES ME $6400 A YEAR! I know to most people on here, even $2K seems high, but I was paying Progressive $500 a month before I totaled a Ferrari and here I am after totaling a Ferrari Paying $200 a month less than Progressive!

I'm overwhelmed and overjoyed with the results. Thank you everyone for the tips and advice, all the PM's with recommendations. Glad to be in the brotherhood and glad I can still afford to service my car now!

FYI: They did pull my clue report and know exactly what's on there so it's not a misquote!

I got an interesting letter from State Farm. The letter informed me what my rate under the allowed price by the NC insurance commission was and what they wanted to charge me. It said that they were charging 10% more and that in order to keep my insurance I had to sign an agreement that stated that I understood that I was paying more and could switch to other insurance agencies. Can you believe their audacity? I did one better, I called the other insurance agencies and cancelled them.

In a couple more years you will hear that they are making partial restitution to their customers, paying a small fine and admit no wrong doing. Mark my words.

Auto insurance clearly is a license to steal. If you have several cars you are required to carry separate liability and collision insurance on each even though you couldn't possibly drive more than one at a time.
