    Well it finally happened....

after 4 years, I had my first major break on the F40.

I was playing at Gateway this weekend and doing pretty well for an old guy!

Went through 2 tanks of gas on Friday and the car was very, very happy (FAST).

Saturday I was booked up every lap with guest and charity rides, on my 2nd session I started to hear a gearbox rattle.

The car was still pulling, the box still shifts and feels fine, but 2nd gear has a death rattle.

I put her back in the truck, she is at Autosport Gallery and we will have the box out this week.... I will keep you posted!

These are great cars, I drive mine like it was meant to be driven, so I am ok with this, I just hope it is not too bad!

    Chris

Looks like a perfect opportunity to shop around for a gearbox upgrade.

Sounds like only good news to me... i suspect that, more often than not, a majority of F40s see repair due to unuse and neglect... Enzo is smiling down on your gearbox repair...

    This I am.

F40 box'es I am not 100% on. We really do not hear that many issues on their boxes at all.

Good luck Chris, and hope it is something easy!

    Best~

Chris, Sorry again mate. Being there, I can say that you were a very good sport about it. That's a good sign. I look forward to seeing you with the smile back on your face BEHIND THE WHEEL! I will have to send you a shot from one of your hot laps...leading the pack...going about 130...for you to look at as you await the return of your glorious machine! Regards, Jim

Always fun to hear about your adventures with your F40! Sounds like you were out making others happy with your F-car. Good luck with the gearbox.

Yeah, way to sad that you left us playing alone...but not before seeing you having fun in Aaron's 355. It was fun to run together again..
We kept going till late Sunday without any problems beside Jim's big crash..
Best of luck to get the car ready for our run in November!
    I count on you

Are you going to need a 10 ton press?

    Hey Chris,

If you're interested, I can do a conversion of your 'box to dog engagement, straight-cut gears, from Modena Engineering out of Australia. I'd need the box for a month. Cost about $16,500. We could change some ratios too while building.

My company represents them in the States.

    Let me know.

    Best regards,

    Rob Schermerhorn

Rob, that sounds fun, but I think I would like to have another box to modify for that...

We got the box out and apart today, it was 2nd gear, broke 3 teeth.

This box is so clunky cold, so I know I must have done it early on the track, stupid on my part!

Just have to get the box HOT before she is happy!

Looks like the 2nd gear set is about $1,100 so less than I first thought.

If my mechanic is nice to me (sometimes) it may be fairly gentle!

Jim's 993 is now a cube in a wrecking yard, nothing to save.

Jim broke a bone or two and has his arm in a splint...

Serious pressure from home to stay off the race track......

I wish him the best, a great guy, a great new friend...

Well that is his problem then ... if he had stayed ON the track he would not have bent his car ;) :D

Seriously not good news, hope he makes a full and speedy recovery :).

Sorry to hear of the trouble, Chris. Best luck getting her back together quickly. FWIW, I saw an F40 gearbox on ebay not long ago...

It sounds like it is a good time check the clutch and the positraction...
Glad to hear it wont be real expensive.

I switched over to Torco oil in the gear box and it has really helped with the cold shifting. No track time yet. :( Soon I hope. Good luck on the repairs.
