Ah cool! I saw that car for sale a while back. I was at Road Atlanta all three days.

I'm going to shoot you a PM in a few if you don't mind, I have a HUGE passion for vintage racing.

Wow, that is really great! This is a make of car that I had not heard of before. It looks like a lot of fun....midway between a S2 car and a CanAm car. Congratulations on the RA finish.

Pretty amazing considering the S2 lap record is a high 1:27...

Hey thanks for all the nice replies guys. the car was made by Picchio which is a small Italian manufacturer that has also made Daytona Prototype chassis for the Grand Am series. This car and its sister car were built and raced for the European interseries in 1999 and 2000 with some limited success including a few podiums. They were then brought to the US to race in the Grand Am series in the SRP2 class but this car was never raced as it was the the backup car.
It was raced in Europe with both Alfa Romeo V-6 and BMW straight six engines and it is thought to be one of the last cars to be campaigned with the Martini sponsored livery which is its original paint scheme. It now has the BMW engine putting out about 400 horsepower but it still has its FIA restrictor built into the airbox so I would guess it is about 350-360 horsepower.
The car is a lot of fun to drive but coming from a GT car background I was not used to the cornering speeds of this little monster and it took some adjustment. Road Atlanta is a scary fast track with a couple of intimidating corners but I was able to run in the 1:29's which I was pleased with considering the little amount of seat time. I did not know the SRP2 track record was 1:27's so I guess I am REALLY pleased.
The car is actualy really nice to drive but obviously power wise I was not even close to the two Audi R-8's of which one was being driven by Andy Wallace/ Bill Adam or the Jaguar or Intrepid I was on track with. However it was faster than several Porsche Cup Cars which surprised me a lot!
The car got lots of attention as I am not sure it has ever been raced much here in the US if at all.
Next race will be HSR Historics at Sebring end of October for the 4 hour enduro~!

Is that correct Peter? I was able to run consistent 1:29-1:30's and that was with Hoosier R6 tires which are really wrong for the car as the sidewalls are much to stiff for a car this light.

did peter mean srp2 or sports 2000?

i have not raced at road a since the new track config so i don't know all the times like the good old days...gawd i miss the dip!!!

in 98 i did a 1:29 on my 750 superbike...nearly threw it away two times on that lap! i remember testing with bobby and tommy archer in 90 when the trans am car did 16's!!

i always wondered if the gtp cars were ever going to run 00's? boy there were some fast guys around that track and man did it command respect!!!!

sorry for the fleeting thoughts...just remembering good times!!!

Yeah, you don't see many SRP2 cars at Road Atlanta.

It's funny to think that lap times were that without 10A-B and now Peugeot with that chicane has ran a 1:04.

Nice times with the Picchio. That's not bad at all, Long was running 1:26s in that GTC car they had out during the Cayman race.

The Picchio looks outstanding in the Martini colors.

The Group 44 Jaguar is not lost here either. Tullius had
that car built for the 1988 IMSA GTP season, appears
to be a Lee Dykstra design, but it never raced following
the announcement that TWR was coming over to race
in the US which pulled the plug on Tullius' program. He
did run one of the Group 44 XJR-7s rebadged as an
"Eagle" (if memory serves) with Goodyear backing at the
1988 24 Hours of Daytona co-driven by Hurley Haywood
    and Brian Redman.

The new car has sat in Tullius' hangar at Sebring
for years without having turned a wheel in competition
so it's interesting that it's appearing in HSR events now.

The differences in the last Group 44 Jag vs. the XJR-7
are subtle but the give away are the sidepods which arch up
higher to accomodate larger radiators and more prominent
    graphics.

Very interesting thread, thanks for sharing.

Jerome, it's a beautiful car, congrats for getting it and running it.

The 140 bhp S2 (Sports 2000) record is 1:27.8 by John Fergus (six time National champ) at Road Atlanta. Now, these cars have slicks and you could replace the R6's with Dunlop, Pirelli or Michelin slicks, I think. Another option is the Avons, but you need slicks! :)

The SRPII cars never ran at Road Atlanta as the series that recognized them, Grand Am, is the competitor of ALMS and Road Atlanta's owner, Don Panoz.

The best race lap the Picchio-BMW did at Daytona in 2002 was by Darren Law at a mid 1:57, they did a 2:00 in the damp 2003 race.

The best Daytona lap for a Stohr D Sports car is Garry Crook's 1:55.1 and he's beaten the guy that has the current Stohr D Sports record at Road Atlanta, a 1:18.1. Perhaps the target time for the Picchio with slicks and a pro might be 1:20-21 at Atlanta?

The Lola B2K/Nissan 3-liter LMP675's from that time at Road Atlanta were between 1:14-1:16.

A great effort by you and thanks for bringing it out!

Wow! Guess what? I have the sister car!

Well technically it belongs to a good friend of mine but I've actually driven it more than he has. What a tremendous machine. I'm at home at VIR and I think this (yellow) car has done 1:48s there on Full Course. I haven't spent enough time practicing to get those times but I'm sure the car can do it, especially with the proper engine map and without the Grand Am restrictor plate. Good luch with your sale!
