Hi, its looking pretty good now that i have cleaned it up and applied some stone chip. Yep the little rubber mat is there and in good shape. I have a new battery ready to be fitted, along with the wiring for the Ferrari OEM battery charger.

One thing i have learned from spending days cleaning up under the arches - how original and unmolested the car is, everything is original, all the panels are original and in perfect condition - its such a straight rust-free little car!

If anyone was ever wondering how the skid plates were attached, in the above picture you can see the retaining brackets and bolts.

Here they are from the other side, on the newly painted front bumper...

I removed the gearbox heat shield to make a few repairs and clean up then repaint.

Here is a before picture, it is looking pretty tired and scruffy!

First I removed the heat shield matting and recovered it with new heat shield - its now ready to rivet back on once the cover is painted.

    More pic's to follow:
I have replaced one of the small brackets that was missing, made a few fibreglass repairs, i will fill and sand a few small areas tomorrow, then repaint and reassemble.

I think rather than being a heatshield this serves as a cooler for the clutch.
    It scoops up incoming air.

Are you sure? As there was a lot of heat tarnish on the top of mine, and it has a zirotec style heat mat on it, so it is definitely shielding the gearbox from exhaust heat.
If you are sitting in traffic and there is no air flow, the exhaust would heat that area up very quickly, surely the cover provides some form of heat protection?

Yea its a cooler, the bottom two ducts take air to and around the clutch cover. Challenge cars use them to air with extra cooling air.
Of course by its very nature of being a cover, it will shield what ever its covering.

    Some cars have them missing.
But yes they must have heat protection as well otherwise why the heatshield material?

I got a carbon fibre one..matches the diffusers i have.

I was fed up with the oem diffusers cracking and looking shabby

Yea mine did not have them.
I have always fancied the carbon deffusers my self. I bet they look great with the cooler/shield.

    Yeh Dino.

They cant really be seen that well but nice to know they are not gonna crack or flake.

I really think the quality of the 355 under panels and wheelarch liners are pretty badly made.

Even if u buy brand new oem ones they are pretty crappy.

Ferrari in those days not too great with fibreglass matting?

Hey you know I'm not trying to torch a flame but come on!! I hear so many complaints re quality of the 355 but let's not forget they where mostly hand made and I personally believe that in itself makes them a wee bit special!! Don't forget this car was hailed as a car that probably saved ferrari and Jeremy clarkson raves about the 355 as being one of the best supercars ever made! I will side with jezza 100% because I too drink too much
,smoke too much, wear horribly outdated clothes and in general I'm also an obnoxious TOSSER so that's two of us who are right. By the way I'm pissed as I type this!!!

I finished preparing the gearbox shield for paint, gave it a few coats of Wurth Automative paint, really pleased with the transformation.

Then riveted the original heat pad back on - with a new layer of heat shield applied.

I had some adhesive coated heat shield left over, so i cut out a few shapes and stuck them to the heat shield to give the cover some additional protection.

While I was painting the gearbox cover, I painted the centre hubs of the four new disks. I masked all the pad contact areas and painted the centre areas with Wurth Automotive - I got a really solid paint finish, should provide a little protection when refitted.

The front boot carpet cleaned up very well, it was always in good condition but the result from brushing and hovering for a while it is great!

I have an easy fix for any cuts or splits in the carpet, I had a couple. Use a heat gun on the area of the cut - this makes the carpet nice and malleable, reform the area bringing all the edges of the split together - them apply a small pad to the rear with upholstery glue. As long as it is a cut or a split, and not a hole, you should be able to get a perfect result and an invisible mend.
