I would say close if you stick with the new 1080 Samsung DLPs

I have a 7178 which is the 71" version of 1080. I don't know that much about the others. But, that site is a great place to ask questions and read info.

In general, not sure, for me it was because I thought the price diff vs upgrading to another tv later was not worth it.

This replaced a 46" rear projection 4:3 that I bought for $1800 and lasted 11 years. In fact it still works.....

I can tell you most TV broadcasts including Directv is still not HD and some HD is 720 so most of what I watch I'm not getting the full use of 1080. But who's to say if that will change in a few years ....plus the Xbox looks great and I think will have an upgrade to HD-DVD.

It will be in a couple of years. Xbox 360 can output native 1080p, BluRay and HD-DVD will output 1080p.

Why is 1080p worth it? It provides no benefit in picture quality over 1080i, does it? Also, I thought 1080p was not part of the HD spec, and therefore it could all change before anything mainstream ever gets broadcast in it.

I thought much of the high end HD stuff was 1080i 60fps which is the same as 1080p 30fps

I have a 51inch Samsung DLP at my beach house and one of things they didn't tell me and I didn't think of when I bought it was that the tv needs to be watched at eye level or the picture sucks. Mine is in a built in unit that is over a fireplace so it is about 5feet off the ground and when you are sitting on the couch looking at it, it is WAY darker than when you stand up. Had I known this I would have just got another plasma but figured it was in a built in and it looks like a plasma from the front anyway. (Boy was I wrong). I have it tilted forward now for a better picture but still not as good. If you have a DLP on the floor at eye level the picture is great.

I custom built my cabinet also and I tilt the TV about 5% to give perfect veiwing. Do you have a new model? The new ones are very bright. Personally I like having it 38" above the floor. It makes it like a theater experience and easier on my head angle.

Picts on on the link I posted

True, but you're talking about broadcast specs. The 1080p blu-ray, HD-DVD, etc. is actually 1080p 60fps.

Broadcast will be using 1080i 60fps as the highest resolution for the forseeable future due to bandwidth issues. Blu-Ray, HD-DVD and game consoles (and PC's) will be the only sources for 1080p 60. 1080p 60 is the native format for digital motion picture "film".

    Technically, non-CRT TV's deinterlace 1080i.

Mine is last years model but like yours it needs tilted to have a good picture from where we sit. Personally I don't like the looks of the TV tilted forward and if I had another room that needed a large tv that doesn't already have one I would swap this out for a Plasma or LCD that has a great picture without the tilt.

I own a Plasma and LCD and would choose DLP anywhere I have the room.

    +1

I own 50 and 42 plasmas and 2 Samsung DLPs - an older 46 for the bedroom (it's big) and a 56 pedastal model and they look better to me than the plasma with no burn in worries.

BTW I can't believe how quickly the price has dropped on TVs over the past year - I am amazed everytime I walk into Costco.
