So I went for a deep tissue massage yesterday. It was the first time getting one and have done regular massages before. Just to give you a brief background on myself. I have lower back problems(Herniated Disc in L4 and L5) for the last 10 years. I have been doing exercises and stretches to take care of it and my back is better then it ever has been. Anyways, i go for my massage and the masseuse works only on my upper body. During the massage she tells me I am way to stiff and tense, which I already knew that. She starts with my upper back and then moves down to my lower back. Then from there she works on my shoulders and neck. After my massage is done, the masseuse leaves the room so I can put my clothes back on. I get up and all of sudden I feel really dizzy and nauseas. I didnt say anything to the masseuse, I just wanted to get out of there and go home. On the way home it got worse, I had a hard time driving. I got home, laid down on the couch and went to sleep for an hour. After that I was fine. Any ideas of why I was dizzy? Is it me or did the masseuse do something wrong?

I'm no MD (although I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night), but every time my masseuse "does" me she says to drink LOTS of water since a good deep tissue massage gets the muscles to release all their "toxins". Kinda like wringing out a sponge. Maybe, this has something to do with being dizzy/nauseous.

You definitely need lots of water, but the deep tissue has also just "opened up" some blood vessels and the like that are flowing more freely than before.

Hell if I know. It's just something I've always been told by masseuse's. I have felt crappy the night after a massage once or twice after not drinking any water, though.

What you had was a vaso-vagal reaction, nothing to do with "toxins".

Not medical advice, entertainment only, blah blah blah.

In addition to Urotrash's comments; When going from a lying position to standing your blood pressure drops. Sometimes more than others. It is called orthostatic hypotension which can cause dizziness/fainting/nausea. It usually subsides within a few minutes.

The happy ending tends to take care of the toxins and the vaso-whatever for me.

So which ever Fchatter said the dizziness was do to not having enough water was correct. Spoke to my massuse and said thats why I was dizzy. She said it was pretty common.

So, somehow you were not dizzy, has massage, mysteriously lost so much water during the massage that you became dizzy?

So she is not only a massuse, she is a physiologist...

    I won't even try.

From what I've heard the vaso-vagal thing is a likely the cause. Involuntary spasms from nerve stimulation cause dizziness. It can happen when you get a nasogastric tube put down your nose, a needle injection, migraine headache, etc. I used to get bruised from massage but never dizzy.
