He seems relaxed compared to me before hunting season.

I know hunting is not everyone's cup of tea, but for those who enjoy hunting and the outdoors, it's way more than Christmas to us.

And Dave, I don't have any big hunting trips planned this year. Probably just some pheasant and such. Next year though...

    Happy Hunting!

Yeah, I've seen so many deer on the road. Nasty for sure, but they pack a huge punch. One hit my neighbors van and put a huge dent in the sliding door. It looked like a car t-boned it. My mom was saying its so sad they just cross the road, and we should put a baby one in the backseat, and all that came to mind was Tommy Boy. :D

Where ya goin'? Farm in north-central Missouri.

Who ya goin with'? College friend who's family owns said farm.

    When ya goin'? Nov 14 - 17

What ya shootin' with? Browning Stainless Stalker in .300 Win Mag

What's your tricks? The more time in the tree, the higher your odds of success.

You a high stand or ground blind or still-huntin'-on-foot kinda guy? Tree stands and a few ground blinds.

What ya gonna eat? Deer, of course! But we also fry a turkey every year on Friday night.

    What ya gonna drink? Water

Got any new fangled gear or gadgets? This is the first year that we've used trail cameras in the off-season (I posted a pic several weeks ago).

    Where ya goin'? Sutton County

Who ya goin with'? A buddy from work invited me to his family's lease.

    When ya goin'? This weekend

What ya shootin' with? 30-30 Win.

    What's your tricks? Dumb Luck

You a high stand or ground blind or still-huntin'-on-foot kinda guy? When I'm familiar with the terrain and I know I'm the only hunter in the area, I like to still hunt and move around on foot.

What ya gonna eat? Don't know yet, I'm looking for ideas! I am going to the county game dinner that night, so I imagine we'll eat well at least Saturday night. http://www.sonoratx-chamber.com/Game%20Dinner.htm

What ya gonna drink? Probably a lot of Keystone.

Got any new fangled gear or gadgets? Nope.

    I don't hunt any more.

But I always thought the deer must have thought it a great honor to be killed by my .270 Sig Sauer or my .257 Weatherby.

    Maybe I'm projecting, I dunno.

Oh, and as for tricks, I always liked the "strap-tight-in-the-tree-stand-and-fall-asleep-and-wake-up-to-a-veritable Christmas-Morning" out on the green plot.

Been a few years since I went deer hunting. I've frozen my tail off in more than one tree stand!

Anybody else hunt with a 7MM Magnum?

I've killed a buffalo with my 7mm mag. There is NO way the Indians would bring those things down with an arrow and have them crumble down upon impact like in the movies. They would probably have to follow the shot animal for a day or 2 while it bled. It took 2 head shots with the mag to bring down a big bull. I've never shot a deer with the 7mm, but with bow, black powder and shotgun I have 35 or so deer now.

I won't get to hunt until I go back home (Western Kentucky) for Christmas.

I'll be using my Matthews bow, I haven't deer hunted with a gun for years.

I generally use a climber stand and get about 20ft in the air. I don't have to worry about movement nearly as much, and it's usually okay if I didn't put on enough Scent-a-way. Sometimes I'll pack a Rangefinder but that's about all the additional gear I'll take.

Nothern Michigan on 25 acres of pine, scrub and swamp that butts up to about 1000 acres of state land. Its newer growth, alders, pines and brush. I have a few different binds set up on the property. I hunt with two different guns, depending on the set up. In an elevated blind, or my ground blind that overlooks a large field I use the 7mm because the shots are typically at a range of 100+ yards, and I can see the deer coming. If I am stalking in the swamp, or using the blind I have set up on it's edge leading to a winter wheat and clover field I use the 30-30. This gun is easier to handle in rough terrain, and I'm quicker when "putting the pumpkin on the post" (using iron sights) than I am using a scope. I hunt with my brother, brother in law and his brother. We typically get along well, although the first to bag a decent buck is usually unbearable for the rest of the trip. When it comes to food we tear it up! We cook up the previous seasons bounty of venison, making a host of dishes like venison chili, "Sloppy-Does", venison stew, game bird breast roll ups- using duck, pheasant, quail or patridge breasts, seasoned, rolled in bacon and marinated in a citrus marinade and then grilled. Vension sausage and beef jerky with cheese for snacks. All the usual suspects. As far as drinking, never in the field but always afterward. Besides the standard Budweiser, Genuine Draft and Guiness, some local Michigan brewery 6 packs find there way to camp. For some reason GoldSchlager schnapps always makes an appearance by the camp fire, along with Jaegermeister and Casdores Te-Kill-ya, usually the last night of the hunt. I love to get away with family and friends and enjoy the great outdoors. It really is relaxing and allows me to re-charge my batteries for another gruelling stint in the sales office. Hope everyone has a safe and successful hunt! Good Luck!

Our hospital just held the annual chili cook-off last week. One dept had 2 pots: moose chili & deer chili. The moose was shot a month ago & gamy. The deer was shot 3 days before & one of the best chilies served in the competition IMO. Deer makes the finest lean hamburger meat I’ve ever eaten.

Buffalo was way too fatty & slippery last time I bought it ground at Kroger. Really kind of gross even after the grill. Love to try the elk tho thinking it will be more like deer. Those springy type wild critters I like better than bulky ones.

    Dave,
I am hunting in PA this year.. There are deer everywhere and the out of state license is pretty reasonable. For years growing up my father took us deer hunting in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming so when I moved to Texas in the early 90's I never could get into the Deer stand hunting.. Ive gone on leases where everyone sits in a heated stand and feeders kickout corn at 5am and the deer gets shot while eating..

I much prefer stalking game and hunting them on their level. its illegal to bait a deer here in PA and I respect that. With that said I have hunted 18 years and only shot three deer. I would rather come home empty handed than hunt in a way I feel is unethical.

In Texas I usually hunt mule deer down in West Texas (Big bend area) this is the first year in five I will miss it...

Its different if someone is just meat hunting..

    BTW.. I shoot a 30-06 160 grain solid..
I don't drink while hunting, not to say we don't go hanging out at night at places that alcohol is served :)

Couldn't agree more. Never understood how someone could get excited about shooting a deer under a timed feeder. It's not much harder than walking out into a feed lot and harvesting a trophy Angus.

Good luck in PA. They've got some great deer up there.
