I pulled this picture off of my trail camera last weekend. He needs another couple of years to reach his potential, but he's off to a strong start!

I don't hunt (never excited me), but am a strong supporter of it and have friends that love it.

That is a nice one there though. Looks like he'll have a huge rack! (que Lamour jokes ;))

When I read the thread title, I immediately thought of the duck/rabbit/elmer season Looney Tunes cartoon.

Those strap-to-a-tree cameras are great, and I've caught ATVers in my wooded stomping grounds on a few occasions.

You have IR on your cam?

No, this is my first experience with a trail cam so I went with something very basic. My only requirements were a digital camera and a time/date stamp. So far, I'm pleased with the results and might move higher up the technology ladder next time.

Since I don't get up to the farm very often, it's nice to have help scouting the deer.

Probably not, but would be cool if the cameras autosend a batch every day (or less frequently) to your email or some other specified location so that you can view activity remotely. Is this possible, currently, or not?

Yes, there is a service that offers this. The cameras link with a satellite network and then send the pictures to you.

Link? :) My dad owns about 275 acres of what is considered by most to be the prime county in the country for whitetail hunting. 3 Ponds, and one naturally flowing creek provide great water sources too and it lines up to farm lands - so both food and water sources. He's had people as far away from Tokyo contact him to see if they will let them hunt there for a fee. I think he would like this. Oddly enough he is not a hunter.

Assuming that your dad lives in Illinois, I'll be more than happy to come up there and check the place out for him. ;)

Wow that buck has true potential and I would guess he about 2.5-3yr's old considering his body structure and features etc etc. In another 3-4yr's he will be a truelly great trophy. I'm into hunting and fishing and all outdoors but I personaly do not hunt anymore, have not hunted for the past 34yr's, but I support it 100%!!!

Was this trail cam pic from your private property and if so is it a 'high fence' ranch or an 'open range' one and what is the acreage you hunt on?

It's private property, but completely 'open range' of about 600 acres. Mix of agricultural fields (corn, wheat, soybeans) and pastures/woods. The only fences on the property are barbed wire to keep the cattle where they're supposed to be.

That my friend is true hunting. It sound's like you are making 'food plots' which is just an awesome idea, a healthy deer population has so many benefit's not just for them and the hunter's but the farmer's. If the deer population, as you already know, have an ample food supply, dedicated strictly to their needs, the ag crop's will hardly suffer any loss, it's a win/win situation.

Anyway back to the subject of that buck, it seem's he is already in the 120-130 class and I'm probably under scoring him, but I know they grow some BIG deer in Missouri. Anywho it looks as if the deer population there is very very healthy and the 'plots' are paying back huge dividends.

If you need my address for a backstrap just PM me! Just kidding I have a load of Whitetail, Axis and Fallow meat in my fridge, my brother is the great white hunter lol!

Indeed, I only believe in "fair chase" hunting.

Working to successfully manage the quality of deer on a property is a very enjoyable challenge, for all of the reasons that you've mentioned. I truly enjoy spending time outdoors, and getting some pictures like the one that I posted are simply icing on the cake. I'd like to see this deer in person to get a better feel for his age and size, but I think that your estimates are pretty accurate. Last weekend I had an 8-point of slightly smaller size walk up to my stand while bow hunting. I watched him for a bit and let him wander back out into a clover field. Made my day without ever drawing the bow.

But what is your question by this post? So you have a hunter cap cam. Do you want better snapshots of your target? Trust me. I love to eat lean meat all day & can grill up a mean venison burger to feed any bodybuilder's passion.

Since the thread is built upon anticipation, the answer is within the question, itself within the answer.

Think of it as when a female bodybuilder sees results, which, though promising, leads aforementioned bodybuilder to ask herself what would happen if she put more effort into reaching full fruition, and, motivating herself to do so, does just that.

Rest assured, the same happens in nature.

By way of example, after Bambi saw his reflection in the pool, he ordered the Charles Atlas Course and as 8 Snake's photo attests, grew and grew and grew. Soon, the mighty thunderstick will provide more than a glorious finale, as hopefully, 8 Snake will be the one to stuff his face with mass quantities of venison, even as keepsake Bambi looks on, with a head that is stuffed in it's own right.

Some might think it's a waste, but, there's no such thing as a waste of ammo, and more importantly, as post after post attests, a mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Nice to talk/meet someone on the forum with the same outlook. Me and my brother were also raised hunting and fishing but strictly in an ethical way such as you. As I had mentioned I have not hunted in many many year's due to many reason's. I'm gonna ramble for a moment or two just because I'm having a great time sharing an interest with you. I have not kept a fish I caught in the past 25+yr's because simply I love the chase and being outdoors. My older brother will soon be heading off to Kansas for his monster buck persuit and man is he et up with it especially bow hunting and his wife sit's in the blind/stand's with him and film's it, they are like school kid's.

My dad has been on his particular lease since 1979 and my brother got on only a few years later. This lease was/is a haven for the gentlemen who had known my dad since his late teen's and early twenty's, pop is 74, aswell as me and my brother so they were like second dad's to me and my brother and that connection is what the outdoors experience is all about and I swear we all act like a bunch of school boy's. I will hopefully be 'on' the lease officially within the next few year's with them but I will be fishing and trying to 'manage the pond's/lakes and hoepfully taking some hog's, I will leave the deer hunting to my brother and dad. I go up with them when possible just to fish those SWEET tank's and caught the biggest bass of my life last year on opening day of bow season 7+lb's and got wornout by 10am from catching bass after bass and ALL were released unharmed.

Anyway thank's for listening and best of luck this season, hunt safe and ethical as I know you will,
    Gregg

I'm still trying to figure out why you're even posting in this thread. I'm not nearly as talented with prose as Wax( :) ), so my version will be simple and to the point.

I got a nice picture off of a trail camera out in the woods. I thought that I would share the picture with others on the forum who may enjoy seeing a nice younger buck out in the woods. I also hoped that others would share some of their experiences in the woods. So far, it's working out pretty well...for the most part.

Great stories, Gregg. I can imagine how psyched your brother must be, getting ready for his trip. Kansas has some monster whitetails for sure!

A 7+ lb bass must have been a real treat for you to catch!
