I am looking at a trans cooler when I do the engine pull for the dry sump in the next few weeks. Pump, filter and cooler for the trans are easy enough to source. Raises the question of the optimal temperature of the trans oil and if a trigger can be built in to open a valve to direct the trans oil to a cooler/heat exchanger at a preset temperature. The F40 does this with a densimetric valve, measuring fluid density (pressure on a ball/spring combination). This valve doesn't seem to be a part sold separately.

Even niftier would be a heat exchanger that uses engine coolant to bring the trans oil up to operating temperature and stabilize it thereafter.

    Anyone have:
    - a source for the densimetric valve?
    - an alternative part that does something similar (ATF cooler valve?)
    - any thoughts on where to obtain a heater exchanger for the "niftier" solution?

Phillip, Try Earl's Performace products, who are a big vendor for SS braided lines etc. Their oilcoolers are used widely in racing, and their oil thermostat # 501 is no doubt just right for you.

I use an aeroquip water/oil heat exchanger for my engine oil, but it would work fine for trans oil too. http://www.bakerprecision.com/aqp10.htm Using a thremostat as kermit suggests is probably really the best...but what I did was install it on the return water line. The engine thermostat controls the water at 170F, and I pump that through the cooler, that holds the oil temp at about 200-210, right were it should be. It seems to work fine and uses less parts, but I dodn't have the control a separate thermostat would give.
