Early this afternoon, I was returning from my weekend drive along a fairly busy street (2 lanes in each direction). As I came around a bend (I was around the 40 mph limit), to my horror I see a large rock right in the middle of my lane. I couldn't dodge around it (traffic to the left and curb to the right), and slamming on the brakes would have been risky with the traffic close behind me. So, I braced myself and went straight over it. It made a horrendous noise as it banged along the undertray, and I saw it exit from somewhere beneath the car in my rearview mirror. The car carried on completely normally, but as soon as I got home I checked it over. The first place I checked was the front, which looked fine; not a mark. When I got to the right-hand side I saw that the rock had exited along the rocker panel and put about a two foot-long dent in the lower part of the panel.

All things considered, it could have been a lot worse and because it's the lower section of the panel, it's not very noticeable. There is no other damage that I can see. It's still painful though. Any thoughts as to whether I should have it fixed, and if so, what that would entail?

If it is a crease you could use a stud gun to pull it out then a little bondo and paint. You are lucky as that is a very inconspicuous place on the car.

    Sorry Dan,
That rocker panel is easy. Take off front and rear wheels, take off glass stone guards front and rear. The body shop can get right in there. Any careful shop will do. Push out the panel, sand, prime and respray the black. Should take a day or two. I have had it done twice.

Thanks guys. I'll give the car a good washing next weekend, armorall the black area and then decide what to do. From Jon's description, it sounds like a pretty simple procedure.

I am having my rocker panels repainted as well but for another reason. At some point (when I had the Dino Spyder unfortunately) someone used a fork lift to move it! I would love to know who did it but that's water under the bridge now. Anyway, the fork's arms creased the rocker panel on each side of the car as the chassis frame is recessed. I was really bummed find that when I was preping the Dino for the Newport Beach car show. The Dino is in the bodyshop right now getting fixed.

At least its just the black part so no need to match the green, thank goodness...that should keep it fairly inexpensive.

I have a chipped out area in my black from going up my ramps on the car lift a bit too quickly, so I need to do the same thing.

Dan, is that a hole in the metal or just the pic?

    Ouch, Dan.
I know that sound...and that feeling. I recommend that you put the car up on a lift & scan the undercarriage very closely. Find the point of impact & trace it to the exit point. There may be some other damage that you couldn't detect at first glance. From your description of the sound, the baby boulder most likely had to make contact along the bottom, causing it to spring up/out along the rocker panel. I hope your closer inspection finds no additional damage. However, there could be safety issues here that could bite you further down the road.

Oh yeah, that sound...and that feeling. It was a lovely evening in The O.C. and I was cruising in my 289 Cobra down the 405. Without warning, a wheel (sans tire) appeared from underneath the car in front of me. I had no choice but to straddle the rim and...pucker. WHAM! Serious scraping. WHAM! The rim spit out the back & that was the last of it. Well, it turned out that the headers, which hung down lower than the aluminum pan, took the hit. One sophisticated sump guard! There were serious scrapes along the frame rails, and some impact damage on the spare tire well. Of course, I didn't discover all of the damage until I got under the car.

At any rate, I strongly suggest you lift it and look more closely. You know, better safe than sorry.

    Keepin' my fingers crossed,
    Coop

Thanks Coop. I'll take your advice and arrange for an under-car inspection ASAP. I'm also going to check this morning to be sure that there aren't any tell-tale fluid leaks. At least I know for sure that the rock was ejected before it got to any of the "vital organs" at the back of the car. Wow, your Cobra experience makes mine seem tame by comparison!

Sorry to hear about your incident, Dan, but very glad that it wasn't any worse. The black-painted area was painted that way to visually slim-down the voluptuous body section. However, repairs are very easily camouflaged. It's a very simple repair, I am sure, and no one will be the wiser when it's done. Semi-gloss black paint in a low area (at a Chihuahua's eye level!) means that only you will know that it was ever there. By the way, I really like the Verde Germoglio. I looked up "germoglio" in an Italian-language dictionary, and found that it has to do with fresh blooms, or something similar. A spectacular look for a Dino! Fred

I got the car up on a lift yesterday, and guess what? A clear path can be traced where the rock went straight from front to back. Other than a small hole punched in the fiberglass undertray at the front, and a few minor scrapes and dings along its path, there's no damage.

The biggest revelation was that the rocker panel dent obviously has nothing to do with last weekend's rock. I just so happened that I noticed it as I was looking for rock damage, but it's been there longer than that. I've tried looking at photos taken at various times, but that area just doesn't show up. It could date back years, and is so inconspicuous that I never noticed it before. The best evidence I have is this photo, taken a year or so ago, which seems now to show the dent as a more pronounced crease in the center section of the panel.

Don't Armorall the black area! Armorall is designed to restore the look of rubber and plastic by coating with silicone and other compounds. This is not what you want on paint! (Especially if you are about to repaint it....these things just make surface prep for repainting about 10 times more difficult!)

    Just my $.02.

Thanks Birdman. I'll follow your advice. In any case, it doesn't look like I'll be doing any car washing as it's supposed to rain all weekend! :(

I've firmly decided that I'm not going to worry about the dent, since it's been there for years, apparently. I'll get it fixed if and when I ever repaint the car.
